I have been to the Azore Islands twice and am writing this post from the little cabin I rented for two months in Sao Miguel, the main Azorean Island. The first time I came in April for a month, I completely fell in love with these beautiful islands, and I understood why they are called the Hawaii of Europe.

From the volcanic landscapes of Pico Azores, Portugal, to the lush trails perfect for Azores hiking, these islands offer a unique experience that is hard to find elsewhere. Whether you’re planning your Portugal vacation or searching for the best places in Portugal, the Azores should be on your list.

If you’re considering visiting the Azores, this post will give you everything you need to know to make the most of your trip. Let’s dive into the top things to know before you travel Azores and start exploring the beauty of these islands.

These tips below are applicable to all the Azore Islands, and I have also made a video with spectacular views of the islands that you can watch here.

12 Things you should know before traveling to the Azores Islands

If you prefer to read, let’s get started.

20 Things you should know before traveling to the Azores:

1. Weather Variability

The Azores are known for their unpredictable weather. It’s common to experience all four seasons in a single day, so packing layered clothing is necessary.

Also don’t cancel your plans if you wake up with bad weather, as it can change multiple times during the day.

For the whale-watching activities, the operator you book with will let you know if the tour will be canceled due to weather conditions. In case of cancellation, they either refund or move the tour to another date.

2. Best Time to Visit the Azores

The best months to visit the Azores are May to September, sometimes October as well when the weather is warmer and dryer. However, I traveled from mid-April last year, and I enjoyed the peace and quiet and empty roads.

April and the beginning of May are rainy times of the year, and if you want to swim, the water temperature is still quite cold, so keep that in mind. However, it is also the time of the year when hotel and home rentals are cheaper, and the main attractions are less crowded.

July and August are the best months to travel weather-wise, but you need to secure your lodging, flights, and car and book the restaurants in advance. Car rentals get booked fast, especially if you want the cheapest car. So make sure you book that in advance as well.

3. Official Language

Portuguese is the official language. While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning some basic Portuguese phrases can help you interact with locals, who will appreciate your efforts.

4. Local Currency

The Euro (EUR) is the official currency. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carrying some cash is advisable, especially on smaller islands.

5. Getting There

Direct flights are available from Europe and North America. You can also island hop via local airlines like SATA Air Açores. I love flying with Azorean Airlines, but with Tap Airways, the national airline, you can have discounted rates for stopovers in Lisbon or Porto. If you are flying from the United States, you may want to check out Going, previously Scott´s cheap flights, as they often have incredible deals for flying to Portugal.

To travel between islands, you can also use the Azores ferries for some islands.

6. Natural Beauty

The islands are a haven for nature lovers, featuring lush landscapes, volcanic craters, and stunning coastlines. From UNESCO-listed vineyards on Pico Island, amazing hikes, natural pools, black sand beaches, incredible lookout points, and a breathtaking volcanic landscape, the Azores are a natural playground for the outdoor lovers.

7. Outdoor Activities

Hiking, whale watching, and diving are top activities in the Azores Archipelago. From March to October, the islands have some of the world’s best whale-watching spots. Hikers will find paradise on earth here, with well-marked trails for each level of difficulties.

The Azore’s official travel website has very well-done hiking maps with all the available trails and respective instructions. Besides, scattered throughout the islands, you will find well-written boards with trail information.

8. Driving

Renting a car is the best way to explore the islands. Roads are well-maintained, but be cautious as they can be narrow and winding. Also, you will find a lot of workers and animals walking on the streets, sometimes surprising you right behind a curve.

So make sure you keep your eyes on the road and drive slowly, even when there are no speed limit signs. I wrote a detailed post about the things you should know before renting a car in Ponta Delgada with tips that are applicable anywhere in the Azores islands.

9. Local Cuisine

The sea heavily influences the gastronomy. Try local specialties like ‘Cozido das Furnas’, where food is cooked underground by volcanic steam. Do not miss Magma Restaurant on Pico Island. My all-time favorite.

10. Accommodations

In the Azores islands, you will find a lot of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to cozy family-run guesthouses and private homes (Alojamiento Local). If you are traveling in July and August make sure you book in advance to have more choice and secure your favorite place.

11. Festivals

The Azores host vibrant festivals throughout the year. The ‘Festas do Espírito Santo’ involve processions, crowning ceremonies, and traditional feasts. If you are in Ponta Delgada in April, you don’t want to miss the Feasts of the Lord Santo Cristo dos Milagres, when the city comes alive, and the Azorean people come together to celebrate. The roads in Ponta Delgada are carpeted in flowers, and a four-hour processions with music and prayers take place.

12. Sustainable Tourism

The Azores are committed to sustainable tourism. Visitors are encouraged to respect local ecosystems and participate in conservation efforts.

13. Internet Connectivity

While the internet is available, connectivity can be slower on less populated islands. Prepare for intermittent access in remote areas. I have traveled in Pico, Sao Miguel, Terceira, Faial and Sao Jorge and never had issues. But I stayed in the central areas. If you prefer to stay in a more secluded region, you may experience some connectivity issues.

14. Healthcare

Healthcare facilities are good in major towns but can be limited to smaller islands. Although we always hope nothing bad happens, I always recommend you travel with insurance just for your peace of mind.

Among all the multiple reasons why you should get travel insurance is the peace of mind it gives you! Knowing that whatever happens, from medical emergencies to lost bags, canceled flights, theft, and more, your bills are taken care of. I have been using SafetyWing as I found it to be the best for what I need. I have recently found TRAVEL INSURANCE MASTER which is a great site to compare different insurance companies. Make sure you read carefully what’s included before making the purchase

15. Safety

The Azores are very safe for tourists, even Solo Female Travelers. However, always exercise common sense, especially during outdoor activities. Even hiking is totally safe to do on your own, but make sure you take precautions, such as letting somebody know when you are going on a hike and making sure you stay away from rims, especially when it has rained a lot in the previous days. The trail can be slippery and unstable.

16. Cultural Etiquette

The Azoreans are friendly and hospitable. Respect local customs and traditions, especially in rural areas. Say hi and smile even if you don’t know them. Using “Por Favor” (please) and “Obrigada “(thank you) will go a long way.

17. Photography

With its breathtaking landscapes, the Azores are a photographer’s paradise. Respect privacy when photographing locals or private properties. If you want to use a drone, it’s a bit complicated if your drone is over 250g.

If you have a drone that weights lower than 250g you should register to the ANAC portal and they will guide you through the process. Once your registration is approved, you can add your details and your drones and submit your requests to fly in different areas.

The confirmation is immediate. It took me a while to find this out, but once you learn to follow these instructions, it’s very easy. Also, you can download the app VOA NA BOA PT, which shows you where you can fly the drone all around Portugal and where there are restrictions, drone best practices, and many other useful tips.

Also, I learned that if your drone is below 250 weight, you don’t need insurance, and although it’s always recommendable, it’s not mandatory.

Keep in mind that this info is applicable at the time I am writing this, but rules change rapidly, so make sure you double-check with the local site. Let me know if you have any questions.

18. Local Markets

Explore local markets to sample and purchase regional products like cheeses, wines, and handicrafts. It’s a great way to do things the local ways, experience the local authentic products, and support the local economy.

19. Water Sports

The clear and temperate waters make the Azores perfect for water sports, including surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling. If you are a diver, you may know already that Santa Maria Island and Pico are the two best places for diving.

There are activities that allow you to swim with the dolphins in their natural habitat, which is a lifetime experience. I swam with orcas in Norway, which are basically big dolphins and it was an incredible experience that I recommend.

20. Relax and Unwind

While there’s plenty to do, the beauty of the Azores also lies in its tranquil environment. Take time to relax, enjoy the spectacular natural pools, and swim in the chill waters surrounded by the Azorean thriving vegetation. Drive away with no goal in mind and take in the views.
