If you are traveling to São Miguel, I will share the top things to do that you cannot miss in this article.

Things you should know before booking your trip to Sao Miguel
Before getting to the things to do in São Miguel, I would like to share a few travel tips that may be helpful when you book your trip.
- It is about 80 km from the east to the west side of the island. If you want to optimize your time, you should plan to stay in the center, either in Ponta Delgada or Ribeira Grando or anywhere in between. This way, you can reach any destination in a maximum of one hour.
- While public buses do run along the main routes, renting a car is highly recommended. Not only does it offer you the comfort of your own transportation, but it also allows you to reach any destination on the island and save valuable time, making your trip more efficient and enjoyable.
- The local language is Portuguese, but English is widely spoken
- You can pay everywhere with either cash (Euro) or credit cards.
- Drive slowly, as the roads are winding, and you often find people walking or working or cows crossing.
- Dress in layers and always bring a rain jacket or windbreaker, even if the day looks sunny.
- Wear sunscreen all the time, or you can get burned easily
- If you travel from June through September, you should make a reservation for dinner, especially in renowned or high-end restaurants.
- Download Spot Azores to check out the weather in real-time in the most popular spots.
- Use the site Azores Trails to download the map of the trails you want to hike. If you want to use the App Azores Trails, make sure it is updated and matches the trail on the site.

1. Sao Miguel Beaches
As you may have imagined, beaches in the Azores have volcanic black sand and the water is quite chilly all year round (although it’s more reasonable in the summer)
🏖️ Praia dos Mosteiros

- Mosteiros natural pools 2. Mosteiros beach kiosk 3. Mosteoriso beach and stacks from the kiosk terrace 4. Mosteiros stacks from the parking lot on the hill 5. Mosteiros beach overview from the drone.
Start your journey off with a relaxing trip to one of São Miguel’s many picturesque beaches. Praia dos Mosteiros is a volcanic black-sand beach, which is quite a sight to behold if you’ve only ever been to regular beaches.
Located about 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada, in the pretty town of Mosteiros, you’ll pass through many small villages and lush forests on the way here. There are three small kiosks around, two on the beach and one further back, for a snack or lunch. One of them is also equipped with toilets and showers.
This area is also very popular at sunset as the sun goes down right behind the majestic stacks, an iconic natural landmark in São Miguel.
INSIDER TIP – You can drive along the coast in the Mosteiros area up north to Ponta Dos Mosteiros where you will also find the natural pools Piscinas Naturais Caneiros –
Praia de Santa Bárbara

Praia de Santa Barbara is São Miguel’s Iconic Surf Beach and one of the most beautiful beaches in the Azores. Here, you will find a surf school, surfboards for rent, and a nice coffee shop (Tuka Tula Beach Bar) where you can have a delicious meal or coffee while watching surfers gliding over the ocean.
Located around 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada, this is one of São Miguel Island’s most picturesque beaches.
Even if you don’t surf, it’s a great place to enjoy some sunbathing and have a nice walk on the beach. Due to the possible rip currents, it’s not advisable to swim, unless you are surfing or bodyboarding.
🏖️ Praia de Agua D’Alto
Another well-known beach is Praia de Agua D’Alto, also a volcanic black sand beach; like others, it’s a wide beach with a bar and toilet facilities.
There are also a few caves and Cascada Do Secreto Waterfall nearby to explore, in case you’re feeling adventurous.
You will find a wide parking spot nearby, as well as a high-end hotel Pestana Bahia Praia Nature and Beach Resort, which is one of the most renowned of the island for a beach front stay.
LOCATION – Located on the western coast of Sao Miguel, this is one of the closest beaches to Ponta Delgada at a distance of only 20 minutes by car. It’s on the way to the most famous Vila Franca Do Campo – see below.
🏖️ Vila Franca do Campo

Vila Franca do Campo is known for its magnificent caldera, which is surrounded by the sea. The caldera, basically an empty volcano cone, contains an islet accessible by boat. Although there is much to do and see in this town, you should not miss out on the beach here.
There are tours around the islet all year round, but access to the beach is only possible from June 15 to September 15th. You can get there by ferry or it may be included in some tours.
It is also a popular spot for snorkeling, in case you want to explore marine life here.
At Villa Franca do Campo Marina, you can find local operators where you can book your tour. Keep in mind that if it’s high season, like July and Augus,t you may not find space if you book last minute. You should plan ahead of time.
Also, you can rent a kayak and go on your own. There is also a Kayaking tour but it’s really difficult to find space. You can try by clicking on the link and check availability.

🏖️ Praia da Vinha da Areia
Another beautiful beach is Praia da Vinha da Areia, near the Vila Franca Marina. You can park in their parking lot right past the marina, or just leave the car in the parking lot there and walk.
You will find a small cafe and toilet facilities. The beach is quite wide and great for swimming.
🏖️ Praia Porto Formoso

I ended up in Porto Formoso by mistake, but I loved it. I stayed in a small budget-friendly hostel managed by a young Italian couple who fell in love with the Azores and decided to move here. They shared some interesting spots to visit in the area, including this cute beach –
It’s one of the few sandy beaches, with a wide, volcanic black sand beach. A nice restaurant is open for a quick lunch or coffee in the afternoon.
2. Explore Ponta Delgada (The largest town in São Miguel)

Although Ponta Delgada is not a priority when visiting São Miguel, it’s worth exploring if you have some time. The Azorean Capital city is not just the largest town in São Miguel, but also an interesting historical town to walk around. It’s among the most noteworthy coastal towns in Portugal.
If you are not renting a car, you should find a place to stay in Ponta Delgada since most of the tour will depart from here. There are many hotels and homes to rent, which I will talk about here below.
The climate is temperate, and the city is home to many Gothic churches and historical sites. Within the city, you can visit the São Miguel Botanical Garden, the charming waterfront, the pineapple plantation, and the numerous Gothic churches scattered around it.
What is lesser known about this place is how much it has to offer in its cuisine. You can eat fresh and delicious seafood, traditional Azore cuisine, and scrumptious pastries, and experience traditional Azorean hospitality.

3. Visit Ribeira Grande (Second largest town)
Ribiera Grande is the second largest town in São Miguel, located in the north of the island. It is the perfect place to stay if your itinerary includes places towards the north.
Like Ponta Delgada, it is a deeply rooted city with a rich cultural heritage that you can explore. Along with lush vegetation and charming baroque architecture, the city offers a lot to do.
You can take a long walk down the historic city center, soaking in the views of architectural marvels, or go hiking on one of the many nearby trails.

From there, you can visit the northern coast, including the famous Surfer Beach of Santa Barbara or the lesser-known town of Porto Formoso (you should check out the beautiful volcanic beach there). The small adjacent town of Riberinha is also noteworthy, with its great beach, a promenade, and the spectacular lookout point of Miradouro de Cintrao that not many know about. I made a video that you can watch.
4. Soak at the Sao Miguel hot springs
Enjoy peace and serenity after a long day at one of Sao Miguel’s hot springs. Located near volcanoes, the water at these springs is rich in minerals and it is an Azorean belief that it’s therapeutic. Consider visiting some of the following hot springs (Check out my above-linked post for more hot springs options).
♨️ Ponta da Ferraria

Ponta da Ferraria is one of the most unique ocean experiences. The majestic volcanic rocks surrounding the natural pool of warm water make this one of my favorite places in Ponta Delgada. It is relatively secluded and great fun to take a dip in.
Located around 30 kilometers from Ponta Delgada, I’d highly recommend you travel here in your car. There is ample parking space just a little down the road. It’s also close to the famous viewpoint of Sete Cidades, in case you want to make a stop here before going there or the other way around.
PRO TIP – You need to check on the tides before planning your visit because when it’s high tide, the water coming from the ocean will lower the water temperature of the hot springs, and it wouldn’t serve the purpose. Also if you can make it in the morning early it’s better because the place is always crowded.
♨️ Caldeira Velha

Caldera Velha hot springs and Interpretation center
Spend time relaxing at any of the three hot springs in the Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Center. It is rated as one of the top things to do in Ribeira Grande, but I was a bit disappointed when I got there and found it overly crowded.
Keep in mind that there is an entry fee of 10 euros, and you need to book it in advance on their site. The visit time is limited to 1.5 hours at most, so plan accordingly!
In addition to having hot springs, it is also an educational center for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the volcanic formations of the Azores, especially the Lagoa do Fogo complex.
Photography lovers will love this place, despite the crowds. The water is iron-rich, and during the day, the deep blue water contrasts beautifully against the lush green vegetation inside the center.
ITINERARY TIP – You could plan a day in the area. If you are coming from Ponta Delgada you can start the day with a stop at the lookout points of Lagoa do Fogo – there are several, so plan at least a couple of hours, especially if you like to take pictures. Then you will go to the Calderas Velha and continue to the Salto do Cabrito Waterfalls. If you are planning to hike the entire trail (it’s beautiful) at Salto do Cabrito, I will start there early in the morning, then the hot springs, then the Lagoa do Fogo lookout points. Here is the Google Map link
♨️ Poças da Dona Beija

The Poças da Dona Beija hot springs are perfect for anyone looking for a luxurious, heaven-like experience, although they can be a bit crowded. Located in the pretty town of Furnas, they offer five rectangular warm pools to dip in.
The pools are open at night as well, which is when I went there! It was a bit crowded and it wasn’t even high season, but definitely worth the experience.
Besides the hot water of the pool is much more enjoyable in the freezing nights and the atmosphere more suggestive.
There is entry fee of EUR 8 per person for a 1.5-hour stay. The entry fee include the changing rooms, locker use and shower. You need to make a reservation online and present the QR code at the door.
There is no refund in case of cancellation.
ITINERARY TIP -You can consider visiting the Pozas as part of your Furnas Itinerary. There are so many things to do there, and you would need two days to do everything. You can check out my video while I am preparing a full article focused only on Furnas. Among the things to do, walk around Furnas Lake, check out the Caldeiras da Furnas, hike to the Grena’ Waterfalls, in the Parque Grena’, and of course visit the Terra Nostra Hotpsring and Park. One of the best way to end the day is with dinner at Terra Nostra upscale restaurant or at the Furnas Forrest Living. It would be even better if you could splurge in one of those hotels for a couple of nights for the real Furnas experience. Octant Furnas is another amazing option for a luxury stay.

♨️ Caldeira das Furnas

Caldeira das Furnas is a natural park centered around a large collapsed volcanic crater (Furnas Lake), providing it with a moon-like landscape with mud pools and fumaroles surrounded by rolling hills and lush vegetation.
You won’t be able to bathe in these pools, but it’s an interesting and picturesque area to walk around and enjoy.
Located in Furnas, towards the eastern end of the island, it is about a 45-minute car ride from Ponta Delgada and a half-hour from Ribeira Grande. I highly recommend taking your car here instead of using public transport.
There, you can have a nice walk around the lake, visit the Gothic Church, and take a walk inside the private garden (4 €). If you are up for it, you can climb the natural stairs to the Grena waterfall inside the Parque Grena, right beside the Caldeiras,or hire a kayak and enjoy some tranquil paddling around the lake. There are toilet facilities, snack bars, and a small restaurant.
If it’s open, you can also enjoy the elegant restaurant at the Furnas Forrest Living. It’s open to the public during the day, but you must make a dinner reservation.
♨️ Terra Nostra Park
Near the Caldeira da Furnas, the Terra Nostra Park hot springs are located inside a luxury hotel, Terra Nostra, but they have an independent entrance. Here, you can enjoy the warm, healing water of the hot springs beside a lovely walk in the beautiful and extensive garden, home to over 2000 species of plants!

There is an entry fee of EUR 16 whether you use the hot springs or not. The pools are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you are staying in the Terra Nostra Hotel, you will be able to enjoy the pools after the opening hours, which will definitely offer a better experience.
The water is deep brown and iron—and sulfur-rich, so I suggest you wear dark swimming clothes and a dark towel if you want to take a dip in one of the pools.
There are showers available to use to rinse the muddy water off.
5. Go on a whale-watching Tour
A whale-watching tour is one of the most popular activities in São Miguel. The island is home to a vast variety of marine life, including sperm whales, which are resident whales, orcas, spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and blue whales, among many more.
The only way to see the whales is to join a boat tour. Several companies in the Azores provide the tours.
I went on different ones, one time with FUTURISMO AZORES, one of the oldest and definitely the biggest companies in the Azores. They depart from Ponta Delgada.
The other time, I went with a small company, Terra Azul, to Villa Franca do Campo. I had a great experience both times.

Remember that you are watching dolphins and whales in their natural environment, and although the chances of seeing them are very high, it’s not 100% guaranteed.
INTERESTING FACT – Whale watching in the Azores comes from an ancient tradition of whale hunting which ended not so long ago. At the time, in the first half of the 20th century, whaling was one of the few available sources of income on the islands, and only at the end of the century, when whale hunting was prohibited, from whale hunting to whale watching, was almost a natural shift. Whale watching in the Azores is one of the major drawn for tourist from all over the world to the islands.
The spotters that were hired to stay in strategic lookout points with powerful binoculars to spot whales from a distance and inform the boat captain are still working now to help the whale watchers spot whales and point them in the right direction!
It becomes a concern that too many tourists are putting excessive pressure on the natural behavior of these graceful sea giants. The government, together with scientists and environmental organizations, are monitoring the situation. You can read more about it on this CNN article. Also you can watch the documentary “The Last Whalers of Sao Miguel” streaming on Netflix right now. Also, if you are traveling to Pico, there is an interesting Museum dedicated to the whaling industry in the Whale Museum on Pico Island, where you can also do Whale Watching.
Here are some highly-rated tours. It’s recommended to book in advance if you are traveling in the high season (June, July, and August).

🐳 Half-Day dolphin and whale Watching Tour in Ponta Delgada
The Half-Day Whale and Dolphin Watching Tour s one of the amazing whale-watching tours from Ponta Delgada that is well worth the cost. The tour is organized by FUTURISMO AZORES one of the most reputable companies on the island.
They have two types of tours, and you can select the one you prefer at the time of booking.
Catamaran Tour – the catamaran tour is for a larger number of people and it’s better for those who suffer from back pain and may be too sensible to the zodiac bumps- I did both tours and I preferred the Catamaran for photographing with my big camera because I didn’t run the risk to wet it with the waves.

Zodiac Tour– A zodiac tour is perfect for being closer to the water and probably to the whales if you are lucky, but you run the risk of getting soaking wet and also sea sick.
Both tours last around 3 hours. I had a blast in both boats; it depends on the sea conditions and the whales’ behavior. So I recommend going with an open mind and a kind heart and bringing a lot of enthusiasm with you. You will attract the whales.
🐳 Whales and Dolphins + Vila Franca Islet
This tour is with Terra Azurl, an eco-friendly travel company that not only organizes whale-watching tours but also thrives on spreading good environmentally-friendly practices and educating tourists and locals alike towards a respectful whale-watching experience.
And yes, I did their tours as well. You should know by now that I am a whale freak! And I won’t miss any chance to see whales. I was strolling around Villa Franca harbor and walked into their shop, and of course, I booked a tour. But bear in mind it was low season at the time and I only found one spot available, the last one. So, make sure you book your tours in advance to secure your spot.

Unlike FUTURISMO, they only have tours in small zodiacs, but they offer waterproof overalls to protect your clothes from getting wet. A marine biologist will give you a brief on whales’ behavior and safety practices before getting aboard, and then, on the boat, you will continue sharing great information about whales and what you will see.
After the whale watching, before returning to the harbor, you take a ride around the beautiful Islet of Vila Franca do Campo for scenic views.

6. Visit the small town of Furnas
Furnas is a parish on the island of São Miguel, located towards the east of the island at only 30 minutes drive from Ponta Delgada. Though small in size, the town has a lot to offer both in terms of natural beauty and cuisine. So much so that I have created a video about it, it’s one of my favorite places to go in the Azores, together with Sete Cidades.
For items on your itinerary closer to the island’s eastern side, it is a perfect place to stay briefly for easy access. Due to its active volcanoes, it is home to many hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pools.

How to get to Furnas and move around
The best way to get to Furnas and enjoy all the amazing things to do and places to visit, is by renting a car which allows you to explore at your own pace. Keep in mind that public transportation is not very reliable, and they won’t take you to the lookout points, for example.
The other option is staying in Ponta Delgada and joining organized tours. I love this option, too, because you will enjoy the perks of having a local guide sharing useful information about the destination.
Here is a great tour that you can join.
↳ Full Day Outdoor Furnas Valley Tour
This tour by Trail of Nature, takes you on an amazing adventure throughout Sao Miguel on a 4×4. Starting from Ponta Delgada to Furnas Azores.
In Furnas you will check out the natural geysers, hot springs, calderas, and fumaroles. Along the way, you will visit several locations with stunning landscapes and unique and intriguing features, such as Vila Franca do Campo, where you can see the famous islet, a tea factory, and views from various spots.

7. Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias (Furnas) and Mata Jardim José do Canto Garden and Waterfall
While we’re still talking about Furnas, there’s one attraction you don’t want to miss: Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. This is an architecturally rich Neo-Gothic cathedral perched atop a hill near Furnas Lake, so breathtaking in beauty it’ll forever be etched into your memory.
The natural beauty of the lake, the lush green mountains and the magnificent tall cathedral contrast each other perfectly, and if you’re on a guided tour, you can learn all about the rich history of the monument.
While you are visiting this beautiful church, make sure you make some time for a short hike to the waterfall Salto do Rosal and the beautiful garden Mata Jardim José do Canto.

8. Go on a hike
Experience the island’s natural beauty by going on a waterfall hike. The waterfalls here are a testament to the geological history of the volcanic landscape, surrounded by stunningly beautiful vegetation. This is also a great way to get some exercise if you’re looking for some adventure.
Hiking trails in the Azores are well-marked, and you can do them alone. However, as a solo traveler, I prefer to join guided hiking tours, just in case something happens or I get lost.
This Azores site offers detailed maps of the Azores hiking trails. Also, the App Azores Trails is very well done, and it will mark your steps as you go, so you won’t get lost. Otherwise, below, I dropped a few great hiking tours
🥾 Lagoa do Fogo
This is the hike I did, and I loved it. It’s a mild hike of about 2 hours with a very short elevation gain, just one steep stretch of about 500 mt. All the rest was a nice 2-hour walk in the countryside. The views of the Lagoa do Fogo were incredible.

🥾 Salto do Cabrito Waterfall (Ribeira Grande)
If you are looking for some thrilling adventure, this hike is for you. Keep in mind that it’s suitable for fit people and adrenaline junkies. That’s because you will be rappelling down 3 waterfalls, the tallest being 15 mt high.
I didn’t do the rappelling tour, but I did this hike on my own, and it was amazing, very simple, and with spectacular views. It’s included in the Azores Trail Map.
🥾 Vista do rey – Sete Cidades
This is an amazing 7.7 km trail that starts at the spectacular Vista do Rey viewpoint, goes through the southwest slope of the Sete Cidades ridges, and ends inside the village. Throughout the walk, it is possible to contemplate the interior of the crater with its different lakes and volcanic formations.
If it’s easier, you can start in Sete Cidades, hike up, and then go back. Or you can just take the downhill trail starting from Vista Do Rei lookout point and get a taxi back when you arrive in Sete Cidades.
If you get there by car, there are various parking spots in Vista do Rey.

9. Enjoy Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park
Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park is one of the most extraordinary locations in São Miguel. This is perfect for travelers looking to truly get a sense of the stunning landscape of São Miguel, all in one place. It is located at only 40 minutes drive from Ponta Delgada,
You can visit on your own and walk around the park, or you can also go canyoneering for a much more thrilling experience.

Canyoning Experience in Ribeira dos Caldeirões
A fun and exciting guided canyoning trip through the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park . You will enjoy a nice brief walk in the forest and a few rappels down some waterfalls, the highest being 8 mt. (26ft)
Hotel pickup is also available from Ponta Delgada at a cost. Make sure you select the option when you make the booking.
The tour requires a decent level of fitness and is not recommended for people with medical issues and pregnant women.
10. Experience the Sete Cidades Lakes (Lagoa das Sete Cidades)
As you continue your adventures, you should visit the spectacular lakes in Sete Cidades. Sete Cidades is a small village located in the western part of Sao Miguel, near Ponta Delgada, famous for its two picturesque twin lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde.
There you can visit the Gothic Church Igreja do Sao Nicolau, and Walk around the Lakes. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to do a complete round of the lakes but you can still take a few lovely walks in nature and back. Cute ducks will be waiting for you to throw food. I know it shouldn’t be allowed, but they are already used to it.
For an earthy meal and dessert, check out the cute cafe Casa de Cha.

➡️➡️ Off the Beaten Track Half Day Sete Cidades Jeep Tour
A jeep tour is a great way to map the width of Sete Cidades along with an experienced driver and guide who knows the terrain in and out. This jeep safari covers a lot of ground in approximately 8 hours from Sete Cidades to Lagoa do Fogo with a lunch stop in a delicious local restaurant in Ponta Delgada. Hotel pickup is included in the tour.
WHAT PREVIOUS CUSTOMERS SAY:
This was a fantastic day, made even better by Rodrigo, who was a phenomenal guide, and the company of our tour mates from Spain and Poland. We would highly recommend this tour as we were constantly blown away by the sites and the knowledge provided by our most adept guide! One of the best tours we have ever done!!
KELLY – CANADA
11. Check out the spectacular views from the best Viewpoints in Sao Miguel
‘Miradouro’ is Portuguese for ‘viewpoint’. Many locations are known for their remarkable views. I have included more than 35 viewpoints in my customizable map, but I’ll share some of them with you here.
Miradouro Boca Do Inferno
The iconic Boca Do Inferno (literally ‘Hell’s Mouth’) has been seen in any postcard of the Azores, and it’s the most representative of the volcanic island, so it’s definitely a must. The viewpoint overlooks many dark craters, which makes it a unique landscape unlike anything you’ve likely seen before.
Depending on where you’re on the viewpoint, a lake enclosed by a crater is also visible, making it a great spot to relax and unwind while looking down at the view.
Located half an hour from Sete Cidades, this is a must-visit location while you’re in this town. A parking place is available just a few minutes from the site, but I recommend you take your own car.

Miradouro da Vista do Rei

This beautiful viewpoint in Sete Cidades overlooks two lakes, Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) and Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake), located in the main caldera there. The two lakes are separated by a thin layer of natural rocks.
If you choose to go on the Off the Beaten Track jeep tour, this is actually the first spot it stops at. However, even if you’re just visiting Sete Cidades, this is a great viewpoint to visit on your own.
No hiking is required to reach this place, it is just a short walk from the parking area and just a few minutes away from the viewpoint on foot. But there are hiking trails around it if you are ready for some good exercise in this beautiful setting.
Miraduro Ponta do Sossego

Miraduro Ponta da Sossego
Ponta do Sossego is a beautiful garden perched on the island’s east coast. It overlooks the seemingly infinite ocean that stretches to the horizon. There are many viewpoints here, and the garden itself is a great addition to the views.
Located towards the island’s eastern end, it would be well-advised to make this stop after your visit to Furnas, as it is around one hour away by car from there. Both of the bigger towns are a little far away from here, so you’ll need to plan for this trip accordingly.
See it on Google Maps
Miradouro de Santa Iria

Miraduro da Santa Iria (left and right view)
Located just off the road along Ribeira Grande, this viewpoint is one of the most popular in the area. It offers a panoramic view of the deep blue ocean, which complements the green of the mountains that surround it.
The sunset view from here is truly magical as the bright red sun slowly sinks into the blue ocean behind the mountain on the left side.
This viewpoint is accessible from the main road. It’s very well-marked, and a parking space is easy to find nearby.
Miradouro Pico da fero

Overlooking the town of Furnas, Pico do Ferro offers a stunningly beautiful view of the crater lake and the whole town of Furnas from a 500-meter altitude.
The parking lot is just a few steps away from the lookout point. From there, there are a few hiking trails that you can enjoy while exercising.
Miradouro do Salto do Cavalo

While we’re still talking about Furnas, this is another lookout there that offers a huge panoramic view of the town from even higher up. Relatively unknown to travelers, it is much more tranquil than some of the more famous viewpoints. This spot is really a hidden gem.
Because of the altitude, it can get quite windy up here, so it’s recommended that you bring a light jacket or sweater along. Also, keep a zoom camera handy, as you can take great photos of the entire town of Furnas from here.

Miraduro Salto da Farinha
Salto do Farinha is only one of the highlights of the spectacular Nordeste region of Sao Miguel.
Following the instructions on Google Maps, you arrive at a parking area where you can leave your car and either enjoy the spectacular green scenery surrounded by a double waterfall at a distance or take a walk down to the end of the waterfall and get to the beach.

The waterfall is also spectacular. Although it seems like a long hike, it’s actually just half an hour long, although it’s quite steep. Worth the effort. You could actually drive down to a small parking lot, which is also the starting point of a hike – On the Azores Trails app, it’s called Padrão das Alminhas. It’s a 5 km linear hike, which means that if you don’t have anybody to bring you back where you started, you will need to walk back and becomes 10 km 🙂
12. Catch the sunrise at Farol Ponta do Arnel

If there’s one viewpoint where you don’t want to miss the sunrise, it is Farol Ponta do Arnel. The Farol is a lighthouse located at the western tip of Sao Miguel, offering a great ocean view and a pleasing sight as well.
It’s an absolute treat for photography enthusiasts! Although I went there at sunset and it was equally beautiful.
Aside from the lighthouse itself, the cliffs of Ponta do Arnel above it are also remarkably picturesque.
The ride from Ponta Delgada takes around 45 minutes to get here if you use a car. It’s close to Ponta de Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, which are also other great places for sunrise (Madrugada in Portuguese means sunrise)
IMPORTANT – a sign on top of the hill “suggests you should leave the car at the top.” I did it, and then I saw why. The hill is 33% steep which means that it’s really difficult to go up, especially if a car is coming down and you are forced to stop. It’s really challenging and somewhat scary. Walking the hill is not bad if you don’t have any specific impediments.
13. Visit the Nossa Señora da Paz Chapel

This chapel in Vila Franca do Campo deserves a place on your itinerary not only for the beautiful local architecture but also for the stunning views over the bay, including the Vila Franca do Campo Island.
Nossa Señora da Paz is a chapel just a 7-minute ride from the center of Villa Franca do Campo. It was built during the 19th century using traditional Azorean materials and techniques.
The set of staircases leading up to the chapel (it is quite high) has its own artworks along the way to keep you mesmerized. Once you reach the top, the view from there is also incredible. I’d highly recommend making a stop here if you’re visiting Vila Franca do Campo.
14. Visit the Gruta do Carvåo
Take a break from the green and blue landscape and visit this cave. Gruta do Carvão is a basalt cavern near Ponta Delgada that tells the story of a simpler, prehistoric past.
The standard guided tour here lasts about 20 minutes and is perfect if you’re just looking for an introduction to the cave and its mineral formations, geology, and ecology. Expert guides provide all the equipment you need. A pair of sturdy shoes is all you need for this.
However, if you’re more interested in caves and caverns, I suggest booking the longer two-hour deep-diving tour here. Keep in mind that reservations must be made well in advance. They only have one long tour per week for five participants.
You can make your reservation here, and below, you can check out my video.
15. Go on a food Tour
300 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ REVIEWS
One of the best ways to explore any destination is to sample the local cuisine. If you don’t know what you like in Azorean cuisine, you could opt for a guided food tour.
This small-group tour in Ponta Delgada is a great introduction to local Azorean cuisine and the seafood delicacies of Azores, with the expert curation of one of the guides on the tour.
The tour starts with going to the local produce market, where you can see all the exotic fresh vegetables and seafood that make up the local palate. Then you go through a wide variety of restaurants and local shops for tasting samples.
You can rest assured that after taking this tour, you’ll find your taste in Azorean cuisine. You can choose to come back to any of the shops or restaurants to taste the delicacies again!
16. Chá Gorreana Tea Plantation

Cha Gorreana Tea Plantation
Enjoy the spectacular views of the only tea plantation in Europe! (Pss. There is also a coffe plantation in the Azores, in Sao Jorge) The Gorreana tea plantation is open to visitors for free to enjoy the hiking trails around the plantation and the spectacular views.
You can roam around in the beautiful plantation, and there’s also a tea factory in the premises filled with old machinery reminiscent of the island’s colonial times. They also offer a brief tour of the premises, while a local guide will explain about their processes and heritage. At the end of the tour, stop by the tasting station to taste some of the delicious tea that’s grown here.
The plantation is located in the northern part of the island, around a 15-minute drive from Ribeira Grande. There is parking on the garden’s premises.
While we’re on the topic of plantations, here’s another one you don’t want to miss. The Azores Pineapples are known for their rich mineral composition and sweet taste.
17. Check out one of the Azorean Pineapple Plantations
There are many Pineapple plantations on São Miguel island, but only three are open to the public. I went to visit all of them, but my favorite is San Antonio. It’s the smallest, but it’s the only one where they take you on a personalized tour and explain the process, no matter what time you get there or how many people are there. They also have a nice shop to get a pineapple-related souvenir and delicious pineapple gelato.

The other two are also great to visit. Here are some pictures of the three plantations.

At this plantation, you can take a self-guided tour of the plantation and the greenhouses where the pineapples grow. You can then head to the cafe and try some of their pineapple-based snacks, such as pineapple slices, juice, and crackers with Pineapple jam.
The plantation is located in Ponta Delgada, which is easily accessible by foot from the city center. If you’re stationing yourself there or in other big towns, make sure you add this to your itinerary.

18. Scuba diving in the Atlantic Ocean
If you’re as big a fan of marine life as I am, scuba diving is a must-do item on the itinerary here.
Scuba diving in Sao Miguel is an unforgettable experience. You’ll get to see unique dive sites, including shipwrecks and lava tubes, and enjoy the beautiful volcanic scenery along the coastline.
Surrounded by dazzling coral reefs, high vertical cliffs, and lush green vegetation, scuba diving here is more than worth it. Many dive operators are available around, especially in Vila Franca do Campo marina, where you can also book one of the best whale-watching tours with Terra Nostra.
The water is very cold, especially in the winter and spring months. It gets warmer in the summer but remember you are in the Atlantic ocean, not in the warm Caribbean waters. 🙂
19. Book an Island Tour
If you’re looking to fast-track your visit to places with transport arranged and leave your itinerary to the experienced local guides here, you should consider booking a full-day island tour. There are many options to select from but I’ll mention some of my favorites.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1100 Reviews
The Sao Miguel West Full Day Tour takes you through some of the best locations located towards the West of the island including the beautiful lakes of Setes Cidades. It includes a hearty lunch with Azorean food and beverages.
The tour starts off in Ribeira Grande and goes all the way west to Sete Cidades, where you can hike your way to many of the viewpoints I’ve mentioned earlier.
The dazzling views of the craters and the interestingly shaped lakes make for a great trip if you’re traveling in a group.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 736 Reviews
This van tour to the eastern side of the beautiful Sao Miguel Island takes you through São Miguel Island’s eastern treasures, starting with the enchanting Furnas, known for its hot springs and geothermal activity.
Experience the majestic Ribeira dos Caldeirões waterfall and the untouched beauty of Nordeste, showcasing the island’s dramatic cliffs and lush landscapes.
The journey includes a visit to the Santa Iria Lookout, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. Taste the unique cozido, a local stew slow-cooked using the earth’s heat.

Guest Review:
We did so much in one day! Catia, our tour guide, was wonderful. She knew the history of the island very well and was extremely helpful and friendly. The drive was beautiful, and swimming in the thermal springs of Furnas was a tropical dream! The traditional Cozido lunch (cooked underground by thermal hot springs) was delicious. And the park in NordEste had spectacular views. If you have time for only one trip while you are in Sao Miguel, this one will show you many memorable highlights.
