Wondering which one of the spectacular Azores beaches you should visit? I am going to help you with this post.
I have been traveling around 7 out of 9 Azores Islands for two months and enjoyed some of the most spectacular beaches, some of which are more like natural pools, and yet are worth mentioning. I am going to Flores and Corvo soon, so stay tuned for that 🙂
In this post, I have grouped the best natural pools and beaches by island and added a map for each island so that it’s easier for you to spot them and include them in your Azores itinerary.

The Best Beaches in the Azores: São Miguel
Sao Miguel is the most oversized island and the one with the most sand beaches. However, since it’s very common to go swim in natural pools and use rocky platforms as a beach, I will include some of the best ones, too, in this post.
1. Praia de Santa Barbara (São Miguel)

Let’s start with the picture-perfect Santa Barbara Azores beach of Sao Miguel. This lovely beach is marked by its gorgeous shorelines, surrounding cliffs, and strong waves.
It’s located in the Ribeira Grande municipality on the northern side of the island and makes for one of the most popular beaches among surfers. That’s because the strong waves on this beach are ideal for surfing.
And for that same reason, Santa Barbara isn’t the best choice for swimming. But you can kick back and relax here to enjoy watching the gorgeous views and surfers ride the waves.
Or you can take some surf lessons in the local surf school and if you are already a pro you can rent a surfboard and ride some waves.
Also, facilities like a restaurant and food stand are available here on a nice deck overlooking the ocean.
2. Praia de Agua D’Alto (São Miguel)

Another great spot among the Sao Miguel Azores beaches is Praia de Agua D’Alto. This calm and pleasant beach is located in a bay between Caloura and Villa Franca do Campo.
It features a wide stretch of black volcanic sand and a calm shoreline on the southern side of the island, where you can walk, sunbathe, and swim with endless views of the ocean in front of you.
The sand on this beach is thin and soft. The surroundings of the beach are also pretty much undeveloped, so you will get to enjoy nature at its best.
But that doesn’t mean there are zero facilities here. In fact, there’s a parking space right next to the spot, and a tiny beach bar is also available at Praia de Agua D’Alto, where you can grab snacks and drinks.
If you want to stay on this beach, the Pestana Hotel offers a luxury experience with stunning views over the beach and the ocean.
3. Praia dos Mosteiros (São Miguel)

Located in Mosteiros on the western tip of the island, Praia Dos Mosteiros is a wide black sand beach but the best part is the craggy volcanic cliffs and dark sand on the other side of the cliffs, Piscinas Naturais Caneiros.
Surfing and watching a dazzling sunset are two of the most popular things you can do here. And the laidback town beside it is also great for some exploration.
There are a couple of food stalls to enjoy a drink and hamburger while watching the sunset. And parking is also available next to the beach so that adds to the convenience of visiting this scenic beach. However, the space is limited so you might not find a spot on busier days.
4. Ponta da Ferraria (São Miguel)

Not far from the Praia do Mosteiros you will find the famous termal pools of Ponta da Ferraria.
Despite being on a list of the best beaches in the Azores, Ponta da Ferraria isn’t a beach. It’s a natural pool along the rocky west coast of the island.
Volcanic eruptions created Ponta da Ferraria and you will still feel the warmth of it in the water. The water in this thermal pool is always pleasantly warm during the low tide. When the tide raise the cold water from the ocean blends with the hotspring which won’t be hot anymore.
Keep an eye on the tide schedule if you want to enjoy one of the best hot springs in Sao Miguel.
It’s located not far Sete Cidades on the most western point of Sao Miguel but you can easily drive to it. Also, there’s a lighthouse and viewpoint that you will encounter on the way to this thermal pool.
A parking space is available just a short walk from the pool. There are ropes and a ladder to make it easier for you to enjoy a refreshing bath in this thermal pool.
5. Corpo Santo Beach (São Miguel)
Located in Vila Franca do Campo, this tiny beach is perfect if you want to relax by the shore after exploring the area.
This scenic town is known for a variety of reasons, including its stunning sights like the beautiful Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Paz chapel and Vila Franca Islet, and Corpo Santo Beach is a great place to spend a laidback evening here.
The beach is sheltered, so the water is very calm here. Plus, it’s got coves where little kids can swim and there are basic facilities like bathrooms and changing rooms.
6. Praia do Fogo (São Miguel)

Praia do Fogo is an Azores beach marked by its stunning natural beauty. It is located south of Furnas in Ribeira Quente and offers a warm (literally) and welcoming atmosphere.
The water here is always a pleasantly warm temperature because of the underwater hydrothermal springs of the region, and the gorgeous bay and green mountains around this beach complement its vibe perfectly.
As you’d expect, swimming in the water here is a delightful experience, and that’s what it’s popular for.
The umbrellas on the beach are free to use. Parking is also good here. And what’s more, there’s a bar on the beach serving excellent food and it has vegan options available as well.
7. Praia do Moinhos (São Miguel)

If you’re a fan of small and intimate off-the-grid spots with serene nature, Praia do Moinhos is just the perfect beach for you on Sao Miguel. And there’s a lovely waterfall here that adds to the charm of the beach.
The beach itself is super pretty and features the black sand that the beaches of this island are known for. Plus, a lifeguard is present and the water is good for swimming. But the waves do get high sometimes.
It’s located near Porto Formoso, just a little east of Ribeira Grande on the northern side of the island. There’s a sign on the main road that indicates this beach.
There are plenty of facilities available on it as well. A terrace cafe here offers a small variety of delicious food and beers. Showers and toilets are also part of the facilities here, but there is little parking available. So you may want to find one in the surroundings and take a little walk to the beach.
8. Praia da Caloura (São Miguel)

Located in the tranquil fishing village of Caloura, on the south coast of Sao Miguel, Caloura Beach is a delightful blend of nature, stunning ocean views, and calm waters.
It’s nestled in a cove, so the water and wind here are as calm as they get and since it’s also a secluded spot, you won’t find lots of crowds on this beach.
Swimming and sunbathing are just perfect. The snorkeling and diving here are great as well. Plus, there are natural pools in the volcanic rocks of the beach. That’s why it’s a great spot for some quality beach time.
You can easily get to this beach because it’s located close to Lagoa. A parking spot is also conveniently near the beach.
A place where you can change clothes as well as toilets and outdoor showers are part of the facilities here. As for the eateries, there is the Caloura Restaurant is located right on the water.

9. Praia da Amora (São Miguel)
Praia da Amora is a very small beach and a great place for some fun time on the beach, as it’s mostly uncrowded and features pristine waters, black sand, towering cliffs, and lush nature.
It’s located near the village of Nordestinho. You can drive here directly from Ponta Delgada, but keep in mind that getting to the beach also includes a short hike that might be moderately challenging – wear comfortable hiking shoes.
But the hike is definitely worth it because this beach is just the perfect secluded escape from the crowds. Keep in mind that there are no facilities on the beach.
10. Populo Beach (São Miguel)
With a lot of history behind it, Populo Beach is a unique beach on Sao Miguel Island in Sao Roque, right after ponta Delgada. The area used to be all vineyards back in the 17th and 18th centuries and was later turned into a public space.
It’s a popular beache among surfers and you can find locals and tourists alike riding the waves or taking lessons. A few cafes and surf shops are right across the street.
The laidback atmosphere of this beach is perfect just to kick back and relax.
11. Piscinas do Pesqueiro (São Miguel)

Piscinas do Pesqueiro is one of the Ponta Delgada Azores beaches, but it’s actually more of an outdoor swimming area here.
The place is a natural pool that has been built around to make it one of the most popular swimming spots in the city.
You can either swim in the pool or in the marina itself. A lifeguard is also present on the site. And the views are pretty incredible, too. So, it makes for a great place to just take a dip and unwind after an adventurous day in the city.
You can visit the place any time of the year and there is no entrance fee for it despite it being in the island’s most popular city. A free shower as well as paid toilets and changing rooms are available.
12. Praia da Viola (São Miguel)

Praia da Viola beach, lookout point, and waterfall
Praia da Viola is a gorgeous, secluded place to spend a day with zero crowds and serene waters. It took me a while to find it because Google Maps sent me in the wrong direction.
Do not look for Praia da Viola on Google Maps, but for Praia da Viola Beach Parking. This is where you should go. Keep driving along he narrow winding road up to the carpark.
The beach itself is a narrow stretch of sand flanked by imposing cliffs, and to get there, you have a small hike by a beautiful waterfall and some ruins of houses/water mills on it.
It’s located near Maia on the north coast of the island, just a little east from Porto Formoso.
Definitely worth a visit.
13. Praia da Milicias (São Miguel)
Praia da Milicias is basically the continuation of the Populo beach, on the other side of some rocky hills.
Along with being very easy to reach, the beach has excellent parking, and there are bathrooms, a bar, and a restaurant nearby as well.
Swimming is great on this beach, lifeguards are present on it, and it’s considered just perfect for anyone, solo travelers and families alike for the facilities available here.
A playground is also on the beach. Surfers show up here for the nice waves as well. Oh, and a skating track is also on the beach with lots of skaters doing cool tricks on their boards.
Best Azores beaches: Santa Maria
14. Praia Formosa

Moving on to the beaches in Santa Maria Island, Portugal, Praia Formosa is one of the most popular beaches of this place, and rightly so.
Located south of Almagreira, the beach is pristine and features golden sand, picturesque scenery, and calm, shallow waters.
The beach has lifeguards, plenty of parking, a cafe, and many other dining spots nearby.
Along with toilets, changing rooms, showers, and a snack bar, the play area for children is a great additional facility that makes this beach great for families.
It’s especially popular among local surfers, but you can’t really tell when there’s a good swell. Locals monitor the weather and speak to each other. It’s not exactly a surfing destination and if this is what you love you would be better off in Sao Miguel
15. São Lourenço Bay Beach

Located on almost the opposite side of the island from Praia Formosa, Praia de São Lourenço (St. Lawrence Beach) is another gem on Santa Maria Island and the only white sand beach in the Azores. It offers a relaxed atmosphere and great swimming.
The shape of this beach is pretty much a perfect ellipse, and the scenery surrounding it is just the cherry on top for a delightful ambiance.
Facilities here include public restrooms and showers. Lifeguards are also present, but only on one side of the two sections of this beach – so make sure to stay on that side when swimming.
It’s actually one of my favorite beaches in the Azores and the only one with white sand and shallow water. Ideal for adults and families alike.
Best Azores beaches: Terceira
16. Biscoitos Beach

Terceira Island Beaches are nowhere behind when it comes to being absolutely stunning and unique. Biscoitos Beach is one of the best of those here and one of my favorites. I even jumped there in the freezing water in May.
The name of this beach is pretty unique, too, and its origins lie in the volcanic rocks of the beach resembling cookies, which is pretty funny, and it comes from the nearby town by the same name.
It’s located on the northern coast of the island. Here, you will get to enjoy a variety of natural pools as well as the beach itself, which is simply gorgeous.
With the pleasant waters and expansive views, it’s a place where locals and tourists come to enjoy the coast of Terceira at its best. A cafe, changing rooms, and an arts and crafts shop are also on the beach.
17. Praia da Vitória ( Zona balnear da Praia Grande)

Another Terceira beach with the same name as the city it’s located in, Praia da Vitória, is a charming beach where you can enjoy a relaxed evening with soft sand and calm waves.
The beach is located near the marina of the city, which means plenty of options when it comes to oceanfront eateries and bars.
Even though the beach has had a lot of construction done around it, there is still a nice allure to it and you will also have things like volleyball courts, a promenade, and beverage stands.
The facilities here are good as well. And you can also take tons of seasonal tours from this beach to enjoy the ocean.
18. Cais da Silveira
Cais da Silveira is a wharf (The Wharf of Silveira), but your experience here will be nothing short of visiting a stunning Azorean beach with all that’s on offer. It has everything except for the sand.
The area is located less than a mile from the center of Angra do Heroismo and it’s a popular bathing area of this island.
Popular for its swimming opportunities (even during winter) as well as the spectacular views, Cais da Silveira is one of the best natural pools you can visit on Terceira.
The support infrastructure here is great, and the facilities are also pretty good, with showers, changing rooms, a parking area, and a bar.
Best Azores beaches: Faial
19. Porto Pim Beach

The main city of Faial has a pleasant beach right near its marina, so you don’t have to go far here to find a great place to swim and enjoy the ocean.
With good weather, you will have everything from warm and calm enough water for adults and kids alike to swim in, soft sand, and excellent sunbathing.
Getting to the beach is fairly easy too. It’s located close to the San Sebastian Fort of Horta and you can also see it from the beach.
Swimming here is a delight because the beach is ideal for it, being in a protected cove. The facilities are just perfect as well and include changing rooms and showers.
20. Praia do Almoxarife

Located just a little north of Horta, Praia do Almoxarife is another one of the best beaches in the Azores, where you can enjoy black sand, calm waters, and mesmerizing scenery.
The beach is on the eastern coast of the island, in a rural parish by the same name. It’s a very serene area and the beach has excellent facilities.
Bathrooms, freshwater showers, and lots of parking space are all part of them. Plus, the views of Pico island are just the perfect thing to complement this beach’s idyllic beauty and atmosphere.
Best Azores beaches: Graciosa island
21. Praia de São Mateus

Graciosa Island has a gorgeous, sandy beach called Praia de São Mateus. It is a really nice spot for families, couples, and solo explorers to relax and enjoy the coastline.
This charming beach’s gray sand, cabanas, and surrounding cottages give it a quaint appeal. The beach’s good facilities also add to the overall good experience.
Praia de São Mateus is located on the island’s east side, in its beautiful Praia parish. Swimming is perfect here, with a moderate water depth and pleasant temperatures.
It doesn’t get very crowded even during the high season, so that’s another plus. There is a nice eatery and parking, as well as showers, toilets, and changing rooms.
I stayed in an old mill that has been refurbished to become an Airbnb, just 200 meters from that beach. I recommend staying in this area of the island.
22. Praia do Barro Vermelho

This one is located on the northern coast of Graciosa Island and it’s a pretty popular area on the island where people go for a refreshing swim in the ocean as well to enjoy a nice evening by it.
The place isn’t exactly a beach, it’s more of a bathing area that consists of a natural pool with sand there as well.
But it’s a very unique place to go swimming for sure. The natural scenery of the area is very pleasing as well. Facilities like showers and bathrooms are also part of the bathing area.
Best Azores beaches: Flores
23. Faja Grande Beach
Fajas are one of the most charming attractions of the Azores and Faja Grande is definitely among the best of those. This gorgeous Faja is located on the western side of Flores, in its Lajes municipality.
Its beach is equally as stunning as well and offers a great place to hang out on the island’s west coast, with the thriving greenery of the Baja on one side and the endless ocean on the other.
Plus, it’s a secluded beach with little to no crowds at times, which means you might even have the whole beach all to yourself.
And then there are all the incredible sights that you get to see while making your way to the beach. These include a great waterfall, scenic hikes, and breathtaking sunsets.
Best Azores beaches: Sao Jorge
24. Caldeira do Santo Cristo Beach

Caldeira do Santo Cristo is a breathtaking fjord on the northern coast of São Jorge, famous for its stunning beauty and nature. And its coastline and waves make it equally as famous among surfers and ocean-lovers alike.
Getting to this spot is an adventure of its own because it’s a place that you can reach via a scenic hike. But there are also ATVs that you can take to get there faster and with less effort.
Once there, you can dive into the pristine water of this faja and enjoy a refreshing swim. You’ll need to bring most things you will need to enjoy the ocean because it’s a remote spot and there aren’t many facilities here.
25. Simao Dias Sao Jorge

Simao Dias Natural Pools Sao Jorge
The tip of Notre Grand on Sao Jorge’s northern coast has one of the most mesmerizing natural pools of not only the island but the entire archipelago.
Simao Dias is the name of this awe-inspiring spot and this is where you can come for a dip that you won’t ever forget because of how incredible it is. It’s a quiet, serene spot with views that will capture your heart.
You can easily drive to the place; the road is pretty nice and smooth, and there is only a little bit of walking once you have parked your car. But getting to the swimming area requires some effort, so make sure you’re careful.
Best Azores Beaches: Pico
26. Praia do Canto da Areia

Praia do Canto da Areia is the only sandy beach in Pico, and it’s very tiny. Located on the northern coast, it’s a relaxed sandy beach great for swimming when the waves are low.
Stunning rock formations, thriving nature, and views of the Pico volcano are all part of a visit to this incredible beach.
There is a really nice beach bar here where you can grab hamburgers, snacks, and drinks as well. Other facilities of Praia do Canto da Areia include parking as well as showers.
27. Piscina Naturais Sao Roque Do Pico

One of the things to do on Pico Island is swim in the Sao Roque do Pico Natural Pools, located on the northern side of the island.
With a terrace area for some quality relaxation and sunbathing, pic nic tables and sitting areas, showers, and infrastructure for jumping and climbing down into the pool, it’s just the place where you can enjoy an unforgettable day by the ocean in Pico.

Can you swim on the beaches of the Azores?
Definitely! Not all, but many of the beaches in the Azores are great for swimming. The options are endless, and the natural pools are even safer because the rocks protect you from the strong currents.
Keep in mind that you are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, so big waves can be quite common and even when the sea is not rough, you still need to be mindful of the undertow currents.
It’s very important that you follow the safety guidelines and instructions, that are available by any beach or pool.
In some of them, you will find flags to dictate how dangerous the water is at that time. This is an international use of symbols that must be respected everywhere you go.
🟩 Green flag: safe to swim
🟨 Yellow flag: is best if you don’t swim, and if you do, do it with caution
🟥 Red flag: do not swim
What is the best month to visit the Azores for swimming?
The best month to visit the Azores for swimming is summer, but it also depends.
The fascinating beauty of the Azores is worth experiencing in every season. However, summers are the most popular in the Azores, especially for swimming. The months of June to August are considered the peak tourism season and the most expensive and crowded.
It’s mainly because of good weather in the summers, fewer chances of rainfall, and plenty of activities to try. But in these months, you can also face availability issues finding availability for flights, hotels, and restaurants as it gets pretty busy. The prices are also higher compared to other seasons. Make sure you book in advance if you travel in that time of the year.
So, if you’re looking for a budget trip to the Azores, I recommend going to the Azores in April, May, or September. This is the shoulder, which means prices in these months are more pocket-friendly.
And the winter season is the most economical in the Azores but it’s also the coldest time. This is when the tourist activity drops low to almost none. This is why flight prices, hotels, and restaurants have become more affordable than ever, and crowds are nearly zero. However, you can also find that many restaurants close down at this time of the year.

How to get to the beaches in the Azores?
Unless you are going to the most popular beaches in proximities to cities and towns, served by public transportation, you will need a car to get to the majority of the above-mentioned beaches and many others.
That’s why I highly recommend renting a car in the Azores. The local rentals are great for it and you can check out the platform Discover Cars, to find the best deals. You will easily find the car for your needs and rent it for the best price available. Make sure you compare prices with the company website and include the insurance for your peace of mind.

Tips for visiting the Azores beaches
1. Rent a car
This one is a no-brainer. The public transport on the Island does not get you far. So, renting a car is a much more flexible and cheaper option for lots of exploration around the islands.
2. Check the weather conditions
The weather at the beaches in the Azores can be unpredictable at times. Before planning a visit, make sure you check the weather forecast for any chances of rain. But also be aware that it can change in minutes.
3. Follow the safety guidance
As I mentioned before, you are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and currents can be strong. Make sure you swim in a safe condition only to avoid putting your life and others´ in Jeopardy.
4. Bring a towel and a chance of bathing suite
Even if you are not sure you are hitting the beach or swimming, make sure you carry a swimsuit and a towel with you. I found myself wanting to swim so many times but I couldn’t because I wasn’t properly equipped.
5. Don’t forget your sunscreen
As the Azores have a subtropical climate, the sun is pretty strong in the daytime. So don’t forget to wear your sunscreen to protect your skin.
6. Carry some cash
Although credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in the Azores, it’s always a good idea to have some cash (Euro) on you, especially for small expenses or in case you find a shop with a broken POS.
7. A dry bag or a waterproof phone case will come in handy
Especially if you are traveling on your own, using a waterproof phone case or bag in general will allow you to bring your personal belongings with you without damaging them. The Azores are safe islands, but you never know.
Leaving your stuff on the beach or anywhere unattended is never a good idea.
8. Always Carry a water bottle with you
Staying healthy, especially when you travel, is the first and most important element for an amazing vacation. And drinking plenty of water goes a long way. When I found the Water-to-go filter bottle it became my go-to- water bottle (Pun not intended).
It may not be fancy like those colorful water bottles you find online, but it has all I need, and that is, it saves me the stress of finding drinkable water when I am hiking, or exploring.
I just need any source of water, and the filter does its job of cleaning it before it gets into my mouth. So you will be safe drinking any tap water or river water. It’s amazing. And you save 400 plastic bottles!!!Can you believe it?!

WATER-TO-GO FILTER BOTTLE
✔ Kills 99.99% of bacteria of all sorts, illness-causing contaminants, including those as small as a virus, pesticides and nitrates, heavy metals…
✔ Available in different shapes, sizes, and colors.
✔ Easy to use.
✔ Three month shelf life in total.
✔ Better protection for you and the planet. The filter replaces 400 plastic bottles, and the bottle is made from sugarcane.
9. The water is cold
Depending on what kind of temperature you are used to, maybe if you are coming from Canada you will have a different opinion from mine, but the water is freaking cold. I swam in the Azores in May, and I was freezing.
It was a beautiful experience, and I want to do it again this year, as I will explore more beaches. However, if you are planning activities such as swimming with the dolphins or scuba diving, consider a thick wetsuit or even a dry suit if you are certified.
In the summer, it gets a little warmer, but remember you are not in the Caribbean 🙂

Final Thoughts: Best Azores Beaches
The Azores offer a mesmerizing mix of diverse landscapes and stunning beaches, making it a must-visit destination. You can have a blast with water sports, check out cool volcanic spots, or simply chill by the shore.
With lively Sao Miguel beaches, the calm golden sands of Santa Maria, and a lot more variety on its remaining islands, the Azores ensure a fantastic time for beach lovers and explorers alike.
But along with exploring these magical beaches, make sure you dive into the local culture and history, sample the delicious cuisine, and soak in the beauty of each island.
