The Algarve Hotel Guide You Need Before Booking Your Trip
When you are booking hotels in the Algarve, the first thing to understand is that it isn’t one place. People book a hotel “in the Algarve” the way they’d book one in a single town, then realize they’ve landed an hour’s drive from the beaches, towns, or scenery they actually came for. The region runs the whole width of southern Portugal, and where you base yourself shapes the entire trip.
I’ve stayed in and researched accommodation across the region, and what follows is organized the way I think you should actually plan it: pick your area first, based on the kind of holiday you want, then pick your hotel within it. I’ve kept this to mid-range and luxury options, grouped by area and budget so you can scan straight to what fits. Every hotel here is one I’d point a friend toward, with the honest trade-offs included, because no hotel is perfect and you deserve to know the catch before you book.
I use Booking.com to search and compare across all of these, and I’ve linked each property directly so you can check live rates and availability for your dates.

How to Choose Your Base in the Algarve
A quick orientation before the hotels, because the right area depends entirely on what you want from the trip.
Faro is the capital and the airport city, often skipped, which is a mistake. It has a walkable old town, the Ria Formosa lagoon, and easy transport, making it a good first or last night and an underrated base in its own right. Lagos, in the west, is the sweet spot for most people: a lively historic center, the famous golden cliffs and coves of Ponta da Piedade, and a genuine town feel rather than a resort strip. Albufeira is the busiest, most developed resort hub, with the beaches and nightlife that come with that, plus quieter clifftop pockets if you choose carefully.
Heading east, Tavira and the eastern Algarve are calmer, more traditionally Portuguese, with island beaches reached by ferry and a slower pace. Out west, Sagres and the wild coast are for surfers, hikers, and anyone who wants dramatic clifftop scenery and end-of-the-world quiet over crowds. And Carvoeiro and Lagoa, in the center, give you postcard coves, the Benagil cave area, and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, with a charming village core that’s held onto its character.
A Note on Budget Tiers
I’ve split everything into mid-range and luxury. In Algarve terms, mid-range generally means comfortable, well-run hotels and guesthouses with good locations and solid breakfasts, while luxury means resorts and design hotels with spas, multiple pools, and a higher level of service and setting. The Algarve is no longer a budget destination (unless you stay in hostels, in which case this post is not for you), and peak-season prices in particular have climbed, so booking timing matters as much as the tier you choose (more on that at the end).

It’s a self-catering bed and breakfast where rooms come with fully equipped kitchens, and guests consistently praise how clean, peaceful, and spacious it is, along with the free parking and helpful hosts.
Worth knowing it’s tucked into a housing estate that can be hard to find in the dark, so message ahead for directions. It has a guest rating of around 4.2 to 4.5 across platforms.

Tips for Booking Algarve Hotels
A few things worth knowing before you lock anything in:
- Book peak season early. July and August fill up fast and prices climb hard, especially for the well-rated hotels and anything with a sea view. If you’re traveling then, the best places are often gone months ahead.
- Shoulder season is the smart play. May, June, September, and early October give you warm weather, swimmable sea, fewer crowds, and noticeably better rates. It’s when I’d go.
- Watch the winter closures. Several smaller hotels and resort restaurants reduce service or close entirely from roughly November to March, so if you’re traveling off-season, confirm what’s actually open before booking.
- Check the parking situation. Old-town hotels in Lagos, Albufeira, and Faro often have no on-site parking, which matters a lot if you’re renting a car. The listings above flag this where it’s an issue.
- Consider a kitchen for longer stays. Several of the apartment-style options let you self-cater, which adds up to real savings over a week or two given how restaurant prices have risen.
Which Area Is Right for You?
If it’s your first time and you want one base that does most things well, Lagos is hard to beat: real town, stunning coast, easy day trips. If you’re after calm, authenticity, and island beaches, go east to Tavira. If you want drama, surf, and space, head west to Sagres. And if you’re planning a special-occasion splurge, the luxury cliffside resorts around Carvoeiro and Porches are where I’d point you.
Wherever you land, base yourself by the kind of days you want to have, not just by the name you recognize. The Algarve rewards that.
