27 Amazing Warm Places to Visit in December

Looking for warm places to visit in December? look no further. In this post, well-traveled fellow bloggers will share their favorite destinations in the world.

From the most underrated destinations such as Oman or Southern Taiwan to more touristy places such as Thailand or Mexico this post will offer amazing ideas for a warm winter vacation.

So without further ado, let’s delve into it.

Beautiful Warm Places to Visit in December

1. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun Hotel Zone Nichupte

Cancun is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico, and definitely one of the most amazing warm places to Visit in December, but I may be biased because I live here :). Known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and ancient Mayan ruins, Cancun has it all.

Whether you are looking for a top-class all-inclusive resorts on the beach to relax and get pampered or you are up for exciting watersport activities you will find it in Cancun.

Go snorkel or dive in the world-famous underwater Museum, check out one of the spectacular and refreshing cenotes, visit the ancient Mayan Ruins, or go on a boat trip to the natural reserve on Contoy Island.

Temperatures in Cancun in December are perfect as we are just out of the wet season and entering the dry season which means more blue skies and less rain, but not too humid and hot, which is perfect.

Early December is good for those who want to save some cash as the expensive winter rates haven’t started yet. However, if you want to spend Christmas in Cancun is still a great time to travel but you should book in advance.

2. Antigua, Caribbean Islands

half moon bay antigua- aerial view

One of the warm places to visit in December is definitely Antigua and Barbuda. I lived in Antigua for a full year in total and loved it to pieces. It is a tiny island with so much to see and such a diverse landscape and climate. It can rain on one side and be sunny on the opposite side at only 10 km distance.

But when it rains it’s not rain it’s “liquid sunshine” and it can go away in a matter of minutes. So never change your plans because of the weather, when you are in Antigua.

Known for its 365 beaches, one for each day of the year, I swear I haven’t counted so many but yes there are many spectacular beaches in Antigua that you can explore.

I would suggest renting a car and going at your own pace. Visit the historical and chic English Harbor and stop for dinner in one of the fancy restaurants or go and dance the night away on a Sunday in Shirley Heights at the rhythm of Calypso music.

There are also many snorkeling trips that you can join or take the ferry to visit the pristine sister island of Barbuda with its deserted pink sand beach.

If you are wondering where to stay in Antigua, the choice is ample and diverse but I’ve got you covered. And if you have heard that it’s a romantic destination only, oh well, it is romantic, but I have enjoyed it very much even as a solo traveler. 😀

3. Oman

Jebel Akhdar sunset

A road trip across Oman would work well in December. Oman offers you a city escape, a vast desert region, mountains, and beaches, all in one neat package.

There are oases known as wadis and little fishing villages along the coastline waiting to be explored. The days in December will be pleasant and cool in the mountain areas. The nights will be cold both in the mountains and desert regions.

I would recommend a road trip across Oman to experience the beauty of this underrated destination. This could be from 5-10 days. You will most likely fly into Muscat, the capital city to enter Oman. It is easy to rent a car at the international airport itself. The roads are wide and of good quality across the country.

Oman is an attractive destination for an outdoor enthusiast. Spend a couple of days at Jebel Akhtar Orr Jebel Shams, the mountains that lie to the north of Muscat. You can hike. Do rock climbing and soak in the canyon views.

Spending a night or two in a desert camp is the best way to experience life in Sahiba Sands, the vast desert region in the middle of Oman. Dune bashing and star gazing will be your highlights here. You can stop at a couple of wadis and fishing villages on your way to the desert.

Finally, there are many cultural attractions including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. I also enjoyed my diving trip at Dimaniyat Islands, just an hour’s boat ride from Muscat.

4. Phuket, Thailand

Pucket

Visiting Phuket, Thailand in December is a great idea because it’s warm, sunny, and doesn’t have much rain. The temperatures are comfortable, between 23-30°C (73-86°F), which is perfect for beach fun like swimming and just lying in the sun.

An interesting place to visit is the Big Buddha. It’s not just a big statue but also a spot where you can see all around Phuket. Phuket Old Town is also interesting with its old, colorful buildings and busy streets.

Wat Chalong, a big temple in Phuket, is another peaceful spot to check out. Night markets are exciting to explore at night where you can buy tasty local food and neat handmade things.

Adventure-seekers will love Maya Bay at Phi Phi Islands, known from the movie “The Beach”. Phang Nga Bay is another great option. There you can canoe through sea caves and see James Bond Island, a famous spot with a tall, skinny rock sticking out of the water.

If you love animals, visiting an elephant sanctuary is a must-do. Here, you can see elephants up close and learn how to take care of them. For a little bit of excitement, try the Hanuman Zipline, where you can zoom over the jungle and enjoy the views.

When picking a place to stay, skip the super busy areas like Patong and Phuket Town. Quieter and beautiful beach areas like Kamala and Karon are better for a peaceful trip.

So, Phuket is not just a warm place to visit in December but also offers adventures, fun, and relaxing beach time for everyone.

5. Jamaica, Caribbean Islands

BLUE HOLE WATERFALL JAMAICA
Blue Hole Waterfall in Jamaica

Jamaica is definitely an amazing place to spend December in warm sunny weather. The third largest island of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, birthplace of Bob Marley and Reggae Music, Jamaica is probably the most culturally interesting Caribbean island.

The word Jamaica means land of Wood and Water” or the “Land of Springs” in the Taino Language, the first inhabitants. It is indeed incredibly rich in rivers, waterfalls, and lush tropical vegetation, which is what made me fall in love with this island.

I lived in Jamaica for 18 months and explored every bit of it, from the laid-back tourist destination Negril, to the more secluded Port Antonio and its overwhelming capital city of Kingston, with its museum and rich history.

There is so much to see and do in Jamaica that I would suggest you spend at least two weeks staying in one of the beautiful luxury resorts. Remember to learn some Jamaican patois, the local dialect, so that you can mingle with the locals and have more fun!

6. Cape Town

Cape Town Beach
Penguins on Boulders Beach

With its Mediterranean climate and stunning natural scenery, Cape Town is an ideal warm-weather destination for December. Summer temperatures range from 23C-30C (mid 70s to 80s), making it perfect for spending time outdoors.

Some of the top things to do in Cape Town include hiking Table Mountain, mingling with penguins on Boulders Beach, visiting the Cape Winelands for wine tasting, and strolling the vibrant Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

Take a boat to Robben Island to learn about Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment or drive along the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Cape Town also boasts a celebrated food scene. The city’s culinary influences span Cape Malay curries, traditional African dishes, fresh seafood, and an array of international cuisine. Don’t miss trying a traditional braai (BBQ) or sampling local specialties like bobotie (a seasoned meat dish), bunny chow (hollowed bread filled with curry), and snoek (a type of barbecued fish).

Top neighborhoods for dining include the Bo-Kaap for Cape Malay fare, Woodstock for its trendy restaurants and cafes, and the V&A Waterfront for fresh seafood along the harbor. Many restaurants offer al fresco dining with views of Table Mountain.

While the peak season brings more crowds, the energy in Cape Town is electric in December. Join in the lively holiday festivities and enjoy long sunny days on the area’s scenic beaches. Pack layers for cool breezy nights and be sure to stay hydrated under the African sun.

With its diversity of landscapes and activities, award-winning food and wine scene, and rich cultural heritage, Cape Town offers a truly memorable warm-weather escape. Use public transportation to get around affordably and book accommodations in advance for the best rates.

7. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires Skyline
Buenos Aires Skyline

Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina, comes alive in December as the city enters its summer season.

December marks the beginning of summer in Buenos Aires, bringing warm and pleasant weather. Average temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F).

Days are long, with plenty of sunshine, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and exploration. However, keep in mind that December can be humid, so lightweight clothing and sunscreen are essential.

There are plenty of free things to do in Buenos Aires, especially during the warmer months. On December 8th, Buenos Aires celebrates the Day of the Immaculate Conception, a significant religious holiday.

The city’s streets come alive with colorful processions, live music, and traditional dances. Locals and visitors alike gather at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján to pay their respects and partake in the festivities.

December is the month when Buenos Aires decks itself out for Christmas. Stroll through neighborhoods like Palermo or Recoleta to admire the dazzling holiday decorations, and be sure to visit the numerous Christmas markets that pop up throughout the city. Here, you can shop for unique gifts, sample traditional Argentine sweets, and soak in the festive atmosphere.

With the pleasant weather, December is an excellent time to explore the city’s parks and outdoor spaces. Visit the iconic Rose Garden (Rosedal) in Palermo, go for a leisurely bike ride along the Ecological Reserve, or relax in the lush greenery of the Botanical Garden. Stroll around the beautiful Recoleta Cemetery and pay your respects to Eva Peron.

In December, Buenos Aires comes alive with a unique blend of cultural festivities, holiday cheer, and outdoor opportunities.

The warm weather and longer days make it an inviting destination for those looking to experience the city’s vibrant spirit and cultural richness during the holiday season.

8. Dominica

For a Caribbean island vacation in December, choose a more off-the-beaten-path destination rather than one of the major, overcrowded islands that swell with visitors and suffer from soaring prices.

The Leeward Island of Dominica, just a small speck of a destination but with plenty to offer travelers, certainly fits the bill.

While the beaches in Dominica aren’t what you’d necessarily expect from a Caribbean island – think golden or even black sands and lots of rocks – many of the beach destinations on the island are practically deserted, making it a favorite destination for an off-the-beaten-path beach experience.

December is also a perfect time to visit the island for whale watching, as whale sightings tend to be at their peak. Dominica is known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean” because it is one of the few places on Earth where whales live year-round.

Book a dedicated whale-watching excursion to experience the whales from a close but respectable distance, though when traveling in December, you may be able to spot them from the balcony of your hotel.

The island is home to an increasing number of luxe hotels and resorts, including a newly rebranded Intercontinental resort on the island’s northern Caribbean coast and the recently expanded Secret Bay, which has been awarded as the best hotel in the Caribbean by Travel + Leisure and other leading travel publications.

9. St Barth, Caribbean Islands

st Jean beach St Barts
st Jean beach St Barts

Another Caribbean destination that I recommend visiting in December is the elegant St Barth.

St. Barth is like a little Paris in the Caribbean. It is in fact an overseas collectivity of France in the Caribbean. The island lies about 19 mi southeast of the island of Saint Martin. In fact, you need to fly to St Martin to get to St Barth as there are no direct international flights. The airport is too small.

You could get there either by ferry or small plane but I would recommend trying the plane and getting a window seat to get a thrilling experience. I am not going to say anything else so I won’t ruin the surprise but the landing in St Barth is kind of special. 🤣

I traveled to St. Barth a couple of times and stayed in its luxury resorts, enjoyed the spectacular beaches, and tried the delicious food.

Life in St Barth is quiet and relaxing. There is not much to do other than, bask in the sun, go on a hike, or practice some watersport, like kite surf stand-up paddle or kayaking.

If you don’t feel like splurging in one of the luxury resorts you can always find cute guest houses for more modest prices. However, a car rental is definitely a must if you want to explore and make the most of your time on the island.

Gustavia is the pretty capital city, full of history and charm, and delicious restaurants. Make sure you take a stroll around the marina and visit Fort Karl and Shell Beach.

Go on a short hike to Colombier beach and spend a day on the glamorous Nikky beach. Two or three days are enough to see the entire island but, trust me on that, book at least 10 days as you will never want to leave. 🙂

10. Jekyll Island, Georgia

Jekyll Island Christmas decorations on private homes
Jekyll Island Christmas decorations

North Georgia and even some higher elevation locations throughout Georgia, may experience some snowy weather in December. But a warm Jekyll Island Christmas is just the ticket, if you are looking for a little bit of a different December vacation.

Jekyll Island is less than an hour from the Florida-Georgia state line, and so has similar December weather to Florida. Shorts at Christmas kind of weather. Jekyll Island in the 1800’s was the vacation destination for the world’s wealthiest families. Once you get here, you’ll understand why.

To get onto Jekyll Island, you do have to pay a toll. The price varies depending on your length of stay. Once here, the best thing to do is the Holidays in History trolley tour. Starting at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, you’ll learn about all the properties and see everything decorated for Christmas.

Afterward hang around the hotel property for some croquet on the front lawn, a tour of the hotel itself, bike riding, or ice skating at the outdoor rink. Once it’s dark, watch the spectacular Christmas lights that cover the property.

If you like nature, then you can do horseback riding on the beach, visit the turtle sanctuary, or check out the coolest and most unique beach, Driftwood Beach. The island may be small, but there is an endless array of activities to suit any taste.

11. Cayman Islands

Winter has its charm, but there’s something special about swapping snowy streets for sandy shores. For those yearning for warmth in December, the Cayman Islands is a destination that should top the list.

Situated in the heart of the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands offers more than just idyllic beaches. Dive enthusiasts will be thrilled by the world-renowned Stingray City, where interacting with friendly stingrays becomes the highlight of one’s trip. For those interested in a mix of culture and nature, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park showcases the islands’ native flora and fauna.

December is particularly captivating in this tropical haven. While the average temperature hovers around a comfortable 80°F (27°C), a unique blend of traditions makes the season memorable. Don’t miss the experience of Christmas in the Cayman Islands.

The combination of British and Caribbean traditions results in a festive season like no other. The holiday spirit is very much alive here, from festive markets to “White Christmas” with snow recreated with the lighter sand.

Travel tip: While it’s a popular travel time, booking accommodations and activities in advance can ensure you get the most out of your Cayman getaway. Whether it’s the allure of clear waters, vibrant marine life, or festive merriments, December in the Cayman Islands promises an unforgettable escape.

12. Southern Taiwan

Taiwan is one of the best warm places to visit in december

December is the most popular month of the year for visiting Taiwan, the East Asian island nation just off the coast of China. The biggest draws are Christmas events and New Year’s Eve fireworks shot from the sides of Taipei 101 in the country’s capital.

Taipei will actually be cool at this time – it’s a transition month between fall and winter. But for those seeking warm weather, venture to the south of Taiwan.

This part of the country lies below the Tropic of Cancer. It is thus tropical and remains warm enough to sunbathe or swim in the sea year-round. Expect a balmy daytime temperature of around 25°C.

You can reach Kaohsiung, the largest city in southern Taiwan, from Taipei in a mere two hours by High-Speed Rail. Spend a day cycling or surfing on Cijin Island, which is a 10-minute ferry ride off the coast. At night, feast in the city’s night markets and see the lit-up artworks at Pier 2.

Next, spend a few days at Kenting National Park, which occupies the southern tip of Taiwan. There you’ll find the country’s best beaches and a night market complete with cocktail trucks.

Finish your trip with a few days on Xiaoliuqiu, where you can go snorkeling or scuba diving with the coral island’s 800+ resident giant sea turtles.

Pack your bags and set your sights on Cartagena, Colombia, a place that infuses warmth into December’s chilly days with its vibrant culture, charming colonial architecture, and, of course, its balmy weather.

This tropical haven, nestled on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a sun-seekers paradise with an average temperature of 32°C (90°F) in December. Bathed in endless sunshine, it’s the perfect escape from winter’s icy grip.

In terms of attractions, Cartagena is a cornucopia of experiences. Wander through the time-worn cobblestone streets of the Walled City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where every corner boasts centuries-old colonial architecture painted in vibrant hues.

Explore the Castillo de San Felipe, an imposing fortress with sweeping views of the city, or delve into the fascinating history of emeralds at the Emerald Museum.

But Cartagena is not just about history. It’s also a city of celebration, especially in December. The city comes alive with the Cartagena International Film Festival and the Miss Colombia Pageant, filling the air with festive spirit.

For a quieter day, take a short ferry ride to the Rosario Islands. A cluster of pristine, white sandy islands framed by crystalline waters, it’s the ideal place for snorkeling, sunbathing, or just swinging in a hammock with a good book.

Also, be sure to relish the local food. From the ubiquitous arepa con queso to the coastal specialty of fried fish with coconut rice and plantains, Cartagena offers a gastronomic journey that’s as satisfying as its cultural feast.

Remember, Cartagena is a city that lives at its own pace. It invites you to slow down, soak in its charm, and immerse yourself in its lively rhythm. It’s not just a warm place to visit in December, but a warm welcome into an unforgettable experience.

If you are undecided on where to stay in Cartagena, we’ve got you covered as well. 😜

24. Senegal

If you’re searching for somewhere that stays warm in December, consider a vacation to Senegal

This West African nation has been making strides on the international tourist scene in recent years, with the luxurious Hotel RIU Baobab opening in 2022 and the prestigious Fathala Wildlife Reserve offering a luxurious safari lodge experience.

Senegal boasts miles of coastline with golden beaches, wildlife preserves where you can see giraffes and zebra, and the charming northern city of St Louis.

Dakar, Senegal’s capital, is a hectic city but with a fair few things to see, including the excellent Museum of Black Civilisations and the African Renaissance Monument.

Of course, you can’t visit Senegal without paying a trip to Goree Island, which played a large part in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This UNESCO site is a difficult and somber place to visit but is very educational.

Near the Gambian border, the tributaries of the Saloum Delta plunge into the earthy landscape, flanked by mangroves and populated by crocodiles and brightly colored birds.

Southern Senegal is less, but the Niokolo-Koba National Park is well worth the journey – it’s the “wildest” park in Senegal with the chance to see lions and plenty of other animals.

December is one of the best months to visit Senegal. The temperature hovers between

28°C (82°F) and 21°C (70°F) and there’s no rain. Another perk to visiting in dry season is that there are far fewer mosquitos!

Getting to Senegal from Europe is fairly easy. Plenty of flights leave from Paris and other French cities, and you’ll also find routes from Lisbon and the occasional charter from London or other European capitals. Many travelers also stop over in Casablanca in Morocco.

25. Curacao

Playa Porto Mari Curacao

One of the best warm places to visit in December is Curacao. With consistent temperatures throughout the year at an average of 30ºC and minimal rainfall, this Dutch Caribbean island is situated between Aruba and Bonaire off the coast of Venezuela.

Curacao is an outdoor lover’s paradise! Whether it’s exploring one of the island’s 40+ amazing beaches, catching the sunrise by hiking Mount Christoffel, discovering the rugged coastline at Shete Boka National Park, snorkeling with sea turtles, exploring caves, or strolling the colorful streets of Willemstad, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

There are a number of hotels and vacation rentals in Curacao, but this isn’t the place to come for an all-inclusive vacation – you would be doing the island a disservice!

Pick from any number of awesome open-air restaurants and dine outdoors in December! A memorable place that should be enjoyed includes Fort Nassau, where you get sweeping views of Willemstad and Saint Anna Bay from an old military lookout. Be sure to visit Plasa Bieu, where you can get traditional and inexpensive home-cooked meals!

Curacao is perfect for getting off the beaten path and exploring hidden gems and a rental car is the best way to do that. It’s safe to drive around the island and is meant to be experienced by way of incredible restaurants, friendly people, amazing warm weather, and jaw-dropping natural beauty.

26. Orlando, Florida

Orlando Christmas Light Florida

Orlando, Florida, is one of the best warm destinations in the world to visit in December. With most days warm and sunny but not nearly as hot and humid as the summer months, it’s the perfect time to escape to the Sunshine State.

While other destinations are snowed in for the winter, Orlando celebrates Christmas in shorts and flip flops most years.

Bring layers though as it can get cold, especially in the evening or if there is a cold front coming through. Thankfully cold fronts usually only last a day or two before temperatures warm back up to the 70s.

Orlando may not be blanketed in snow, but the city goes over the top for Christmas. Some of the top things to do in Orlando in December include the theme parks, town celebrations, and checking out the Christmas lights throughout the city.

All of the Orlando theme parks have special events for the holidays, but you can visit Disney Springs and some of the theme park hotels to see the decorations for free. Gaylord Palms goes over the top at Christmas, but so do some of the surrounding towns.

Winter Park, Oviedo, Lake Nona, and others have their own celebrations and some even have “snow” or ice skating. Make sure to drive through Jeater Bend in Celebration to see the synchronized light show while you’re over near Disney as well.

27. Zanzibar

With its pristine white sandy beaches and heavenly like color crystal clear waters, Zanzibar is one of the best beach destinations in the entire world.

If you are looking for a sunny December break in a heavenly tropical paradise, where you will be greeted by warm local people and enjoy some authentic Swahili cuisine, Zanzibar is the place for you.

The overwhelming beauty of the Zanzibar archipelago will be a feast for your senses. The climate at this time of the year is hot with temperatures around 28 °C and you will be able to enjoy most of the activities the island has to offer.

From swimming in its world-famous Nakupenda beach, to visiting the famous Prison Island Aldabra tortoises or snorkeling in the emerald-colored waters of Mnemba Island the island offers a vast range of beach and water activities, such as scuba diving, dolphin watching, snorkeling and kite surfing.

Zanzibar is also a cultural gem where you will get enough opportunities to interact with locals and to get to know the history when visiting its capital Stone Town, the place where the world-famous singer Freddy Mercury was born.

And do not forget to greet the Red Colobus island endemic monkey in the Jozani forest.
