Does Ireland Have Uber or Lyft?

Both Uber and Lyft are popular ride-hailing apps in North America, but not so much in Ireland.

First of all, Lyft is not operating yet in Ireland. However, you can find Uber, especially in cities like Dublin.

Still, Uber is regulated excessively because in Ireland, by law, private drivers are not allowed to carry paying passengers. Therefore, Uber is mostly used for calling a taxi or a limo.

So, locals in Ireland use taxi apps like Lynk Taxis and FREE NOW as the equivalent of Uber.

I personally tried Free Now and Uber and found Uber much cheaper because on Free Now you have to pay an extra commission (which goes to Free Now, not the driver) as my driver explained.

How to Get a Taxi in Ireland

Apart from using taxi-hailing apps, getting a taxi in Ireland is quite simple and convenient.

The easiest and most common way is to look for taxi ranks. In most towns and cities, you’ll find designated taxi ranks near busy areas, train stations, or outside popular venues.

Otherwise, you can try hailing a taxi on the street, specifically a car with a “lit” taxi sign on the roof.

If you prefer to book a taxi in advance or don’t spot any available taxis around, you can call a local taxi company.

They will dispatch a taxi to your location based on your request.

You can easily find contact details for local taxi companies through a quick internet search, or you can ask your hotel to call a taxi for you.

What Are the Rates of Taxi Rides in Ireland?

The Irish government regulates taxi fares to ensure they are reasonable and transparent.

Furthermore, you’ll find several taxi fare calculators available online to help you estimate the cost of your ride based on your destination and distance traveled.

So, overall, taxis in Ireland are reliable and easy to reach with reasonable fares and convenient services.

💰 Common Fees

The base rate is around €4, with an addition of approximately €1.5 per kilometer. So, for instance, a five-kilometer ride in Ireland costs about €11.5.

💰 Supplementary Fees

If you need to make any stops or wait for the driver for an hour, the waiting charge is usually €25.5 per hour.

🚘 Driving

Undoubtedly, the best way to get around Ireland is by driving. It gives you the ultimate freedom and flexibility to explore every nook and cranny of the country.

And as I mentioned before this is my favorite way of exploring Ireland. I am actually on a 30-day road trip right now as I am writing this.

I love driving around and soaking up Ireland’s breathtaking scenic routes and stopping by lookout points and discover hidden historical landmarks, such as castles and archeological sites.

Driving in Ireland is easy but it is essential to familiarize yourself with Irish road laws and driving on the left-hand side of the road.

What I do is rent a car in Dublin as soon as I land and bring it back when I leave, unless I want to explore Dublin, in which case, I drop off the car earlier and use one of the Ireland taxi apps to call a taxi and get to the city from the airport and back.

This way I spare myself the hassle of driving in Dublin traffic. }

To find a cheap car rental I recommend the Discover Cars platform where you can compare prices and pick the best deal.
