Recognized as one of the city’s hippest spots, the San Francisco Proper blends historic charm with contemporary elegance. In this post, we’ll share this hotel’s highlights, best features, and why it’s a favorite among travelers.

The project

This iconic structure was originally designed by Albert Pissis in 1904. It embodies the Beaux-Arts architectural style that he’s often credited with bringing to San Francisco.

Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a stint as the Renoir Hotel before its transformation into the San Francisco Proper Hotel. In 2017, the building underwent a significant renovation led by the renowned designer Kelly Wearstler

Since its opening in fall 2017, the San Francisco Proper Hotel has received numerous accolades. In 2023, Travel + Leisure magazine named it the #1 hotel in San Francisco. Vogue also recognized it as one of the 20 most charming boutique hotels in the US.

One of the hotel’s most striking features is its lobby, which serves as a social hub and a showcase of Wearstler’s design prowess. The lobby features a mix of old and new, with original marble flooring, exotic rugs, and various vintage and modern furniture pieces.

The use of bold patterns, intricate wallpapers, and a curated selection of art and decorative items throughout the hotel creates a visually engaging and welcoming environment.

The concept

Wearstler’s design philosophy for the Proper Hotel can be summed up as “old soul, new spirit.” She’s successfully created a space that feels collected and lived-in, drawing inspiration from the building’s historic roots while incorporating contemporary elements.

The hotel offers 131 uniquely designed guest rooms, each with its own distinct style so that no two rooms are alike. The attention to detail is evident in the custom-designed furniture, handmade mattresses, and high-end linens.

The hotel’s lobby and lounge spaces retain the building’s original character, while the guest rooms showcase a fusion of French and European pre-modernism, Cubism, and other influences.

The concept behind the San Francisco Proper Hotel is deeply rooted in blending historic charm with contemporary luxury, creating an eclectic and vibrant atmosphere. The hotel’s public spaces and guest rooms are filled with a harmonious mix of patterns, textures, and colors.
