Where to stay in Cartagena

✔️ Centro

The old town of Cartagena is an enchanting part of the city with stone walls surrounding it all around. It’s a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site with historic buildings and churches, plazas, landmarks, and museums.

Centro is one of the best-preserved highlights if you want a glimpse of how important Cartagena was as a city back in colonial times. Even today, the area is colorful and bustling with activity.

What’s more, the neighborhood is also brimming with a variety of great restaurants and cafes and it has some of the best shops for jewelry and specialty candies.

✔️ Bocagrande

Bocagrande is a peninsula of Cartagena. Designed with modern standards in mind, it’s an upscale part of the city with sandy beaches and promenades.

This is where you will find opulent resorts and hotels like the InterContinental and Hilton as well as many casinos, upscale Japanese and Colombian restaurants, outlets of famous fast food chains, and beach bars.

The shopping scene in Bocagrande is pretty high-end too. It has premier boutique shops and a seaside shopping mall with international brands and views of the water on offer.

✔️ Getsemaní

Known as the authentic neighborhood of Cartagena, Getsemani is just beside the walled old city and features incredible street art, charming cafes, and a vibrant nightlife.

There are many hotel options in this area, including some of the city’s best luxury hotels. Getsemani also has colorful architecture and offers easy access to the centro.

Oh, and then there is all its authentic charm. Street music, lively pizzerias, casual bistros, and food stalls, and the friendly people of the area gathered in them to mingle and enjoy their food and drinks.

Getsemani also has pubs and cocktail bars where you will find Cartagena’s best nightlife going all the way until the early morning hours.

✔️ La Boquilla

The fishing village of La Boquilla is located just beside Cartagena’s international airport, making it the northernmost neighborhood of the city.

It’s one of the most unique areas to stay in Cartagena, with an atmosphere completely different from the rest of the neighborhoods.

Known for being a great beach zone, the place has Afro-Caribbean roots and it’s the most laidback part of Cartagena for a stay.

✔️ El Laguito

Just like Bocagrande, El Laguito is popular for resort stays in Cartagena. It’s a part of the city with one of its most popular beaches and upscale hotels.

This neighborhood has a small lake as well with outdoor activities around it, tons of beach bars, and a variety of attractions.

Families prefer it here because of the relaxed beach atmosphere, but you will also find enthusiasts enjoying water sports in Laguito. The dining scene here is pretty casual as well compared to the trendy Bocagrande.

In short, El Laguito has no shortage of activities and dining options for visitors despite being more laidback compared to Bocagrande.

Getting around Cartagena

You will have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to getting places in Cartagena. These range from cabs and buses to even boats (for getting to the nearby islands).

Cartagena is a pretty safe tourist destination. So if you want to get from one place to another here, just take a taxi and you’ll get there. Your hotel will book you a taxi as well. Similarly, apps like Uber and Cabify are also very useful in getting around Cartagena.

Buses are another great option to go places within the city. If you know the routes, you can easily get to wherever you want in Cartagena by hopping on the right buses. Oh, and there are sightseeing buses as well that take you to some of the most popular attractions in the city.

These options should suffice if you’re only planning on exploring within Cartagena. But if you want to visit its surroundings, only then I’d recommend renting a car to make it more convenient and easy on your pockets.

The international airport in Cartagena has plenty of rental companies, so you can get one from there. But you can save up on that as well by using Discover Cars to compare their prices and find just the right car for your trip. Plus, it offers plenty of other benefits and safety perks.

Best time to visit Cartagena

December through April is the dry season in Cartagena with the best weather of the year – so that’s when the majority of people visit here for an incredible vacation.

This is when days are sunny and warm, humidity levels are lower, and there are tons of things to do. A variety of big events and festivals fall in this season as well. But it’s also when the prices are high and there are more crowds.

If you want to avoid the crowds or find cheaper rates and discounts, then just a little bit of compromise on the ideal weather will get you that. You can visit before the high season in September/November or just after it in May.
