Located just south of the Kohala Coast, Kilua-Kono is another scenic part of the Big Island on its western side.

The town is located in the Kona region of the island and boasts some of the most impressive beaches, historic landmarks, and restaurants and bars.

This side of the island is pretty dry, and you’ll see endless lava fields in some parts of the region as well.

But the beaches are way better here, although some of them might require a bit of effort to get to.

Beautiful location next to a waterfall and peaceful area. For me it was the break from civilisation that was needed. Our room was big and beautiful. Our bed was extremely comfortable. The waterfall area had kayaks and paddleboards available.

There is a shared kitchen available for guests to prepare their meals.

The hostel also has entertainment staff to ensure that guests have an enjoyable stay.

This hostel has such a vibe, and it’s all thanks to Travis, the manager. It’s small but that’s what made it so social and everyone I was there with felt like family. There’s activities a few days a week including trips to the volcano and dinner nights.

Close enough to the ocean I could hear and see waves with the windows open. Very friendly staff. They did their best to get us a room where we could see and hear the ocean. Security patrolling during the night. Lots of clean towels, etc. Quick drive from airport. Restaurants close by.

A terrace and garden are part of the ranch as well. Also, many of the animals freerange on the ranch and enjoy engaging with visitors.

In short, Volcano Acres Ranch Bed & Breakfast is a great option if you’re looking for charming and cool places to stay on the Big Island.

This bed and breakfast met and exceeded the expectations of my travel group of 4 ladies. The beds were comfortable. The breakfasts were fresh and tasty. We loved the fresh eggs and fresh fruits. We were able to interact with the animals which was offered as an option.

Bike hire is available at the property for those looking to explore the surrounding area.

Flexible check-in. We came in late from lava viewing and the owners were super accomodating. Very clean, comfy, beautiful property.

Part of the Auberge Resorts chain, Mauna Lani is a luxury beachfront hotel that combines deluxe amenities with a stunning location to make for a memorable stay in the Waikoloa region.

Two golf courses, three swimming pools, and multiple restaurants and bars are some of the amenities.

All the rooms come equipped with modern furnishings like flat-screen TVs and coffee machines.

Guests also have access to private terraces, and room service as well as valet parking are provided here.

A private beach area is also part of the property, and beach cabanas and services are also offered to the guests.

The spa salon provides various treatments and massages and has two saunas and a Watsu pool.

A children’s golf course and academy are also onsite.

Loved the openness of the resort and the outdoor dining. Food was excellent. Vacationers were constantly coming and going, but the resort never felt crowded. Housekeeping was spot on and always made sure we had plenty of coffee and towels. Location was perfect.

How many days should you stay on the Big Island of Hawaii?

Well, that’s something that depends on your to-do list and varies from person to person.

You can spend anywhere from a day to even 10 days on the island and never run out of new and exciting things to do and see.

Generally, I recommend spending at least three days on the Big Island to explore around and get a good taste of what it has to offer.

📍 Sample Big Island Itinerary

A 3-day trip should suffice to explore the Big Island and see its beaches, landscapes, and volcano.

If you don’t know what to see and do during your visit, here is a sample 3-day itinerary.

Day 1

👉 Pick up a rental car at Kona Airport and drive to Kailua-Kona for some exploration.

👉 Drive south and stop at Kealakekua Bay for snorkeling and to see the James Cook Monument.

👉 Drive a bit further south to Pu’uhonua O Hōnaunau (Place of Refuge) for some beach time and to watch the sunset.

👉 Drive to Volcano Village to stay overnight in a cozy vacation rental close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Day 2

👉 Start early and drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

👉 Check in at the Visitor Center and explore the park’s lava tubes, sulfur banks, and calderas.

👉 Drive to Puna to explore Lava Tree State Park and picturesque roads.

👉 Head to Pahoa for an early dinner.

👉 Stay overnight in a bed & breakfast or vacation rental in Pahoa or Hilo.

Day 3

👉 Start the day with breakfast on Hilo Boulevard and watch the sunrise over the ocean.
