Isla Holbox Hotels guide

This post on Isla Holbox hotels aims to help you find the accommodation that suits you best for your needs and budget. I am including a selection of the hotels available in Holbox for different budgets and styles. Although I haven’t stayed in all of them, I have checked them out during my stay and I am sharing here my first impression.

Holbox is one of those places that you need to see once in your life, a tiny island with a hippie vibe and a lazy lifestyle, where all you have to do is enjoy the beach and connect with nature.

There are one day tours from the Riviera Maya and Cancun to Holbox if you don’t have more time to stay on the island.

However, I believe that in order to appreciate it even more and really enjoy it, you should stay at least a couple of nights and one full day, if you could make it 3 nights you will have a blast, the only risk is that you will never want to leave.

Also, I believe that most of the experience you will have in Isla Holbox will depend on the hotel you chose as well. It doesn’t have to be luxury, although it would make it extra special. There are many cute and cozy hotels that will make your vacation without breaking the bank.

So, without further ado, here are my favorite hotels in Holbox.

Isla Holbox Budget Hotels

Casa del Viento

This lovely hotel is where I have stayed. I was looking for a nice cozy place with personality without having to break the bank and among all Isla Holbox Hotels this one was perfect for my needs. Casa del Viento is an adult-only boutique hotel with spacious white rooms with wooden rustic decorative arts. The hotel has also a palapa where they offer yoga lessons in the morning and evening. The kind receptionists will help you book your bike and any tours besides answering all the questions you have about the island. The hotel is not right on the beach, but at only one block, close enough to walk to the beach any time you want and far enough to make its rates cheaper than others.

Tribu Hostel

This cute colorful hostel is located right opposite the Casa del Vento, directly on the beach. If you are like me and don’t do hostel dormitory, they do have also private rooms with private bathrooms. The place offers a lively environment and a great young atmosphere. You would have access to a communal kitchen and BBQ facilities. You can enjoy kite surfing lessons, movie nights, and jam sessions in the bar. The kind staff will also provide useful information about the island.

Marvin suites

Even though I didn’t personally see this hotel, I found it later on during my research and I believe this is a very good option for those who would rather save money in accommodation but still stay in a lovely and cozy place. Marvin Suites rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated in bright colors on whitewashed walls. Marvin suites are not close to the beach but the island it’s so small that you don’t even notice and if you want to save a few bucks this is the perfect solution. The wooden furniture and the lovely decoration make a very relaxing atmosphere, not to mention the comfortable hammock in the manicured garden.

Mid-range Hotels in Holbox Island

Hotel Mawimbi

This pretty little hotel is located in the heart of Holbox right on the beach on a beautiful stretch of sand and close to all the restaurants and bars. The rooms are beautifully decorated with colorful pieces of art. The beach bar and restaurant provide a cozy corner for your delicious meals on the beach. Beach chairs are available as well for the hotel guests to use.

Hotel Maria Carlota

This elegant hotel is located at about 500 mt from the beach and 2 blocks from Holbox main square. Its unique boho-chic furniture and exceptional service make it one of the favorite places to stay even though it’s not right on the beach.

Holbox Dream beachfront hotel

Situated in an exceptional location, right on the beach and at 2 blocks from the center of the town, Holbox Dream is a cozy little hotel with minimal modern decor, stylish but nothing pretentious. The hotel has a pool as well for those who prefer it to the sea.

Isla Holbox Luxury Hotels

CasaSandra Boutique hotel

CasaSandra is one of the most elegant properties that I have ever seen. Certainly the most exclusive in Holbox. The spacious suites are elegantly decorated in a luxury style but without being too pretentious and in harmony with the laid back feel of the island.  The staff goes out of their way to provide exceptional service while respecting the privacy of the guests.

If you feel like splurging this is the place to go.

Hotel Spirit Holbox

Hotel spirit is a stunning property on the west coast of the island, at a few hundred meters from Playa Cocos. The large comfortable rooms are elegantly decorated with pastel colors and wooden art pieces to create a cozy and yet sophisticated atmosphere. From the rooftop, you can enjoy spectacular sunsets.

Hotel Mystique by Royalton

Situated on the northwest side of the island, close to Playa Cocos, this spectacular and relatively new hotel offers a memorable luxury stay in its spacious rooms elegantly decorated with the finest Mexican art and modern style. All rooms come with a 24-hour front desk and room service.

The hotel also features luxuries amenities and services such as a world-class sea view restaurant,  outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center.

Palapas del Sol

Located on the east side of the beach on the way to Mosquito point, this is actually one of my favorite hotels. With few rooms, but spacious and lovely decorated with the bright Mexican art objects including beautiful large colorful paintings on the whitewashed walls. The restaurant is also quite popular. One of the deluxe room has also a private tower for spectacular views of Holbox. Every room features a nice terrace where you can relax after a busy day discovering the island.

The stretch of beach is spectacular with palapas and beach chairs for your perusal.

Villas HM Paraiso del Mar

No doubt this hotel is also one great choice for your luxury stay in Holbox and located directly on the beach. However, although the rooms are lovely and spacious, with fine decorating touches, I don’t really like the fact that they are all very close to each other’s, which gave me an overwhelming feeling. I love smaller hotels with lots of open spaces, but that’s just my perception. Otherwise, this hotel is a great choice and that’s why I have included it in my list of favorites.

Las Nubes Holbox

Las Nubes is the iconic hotel of Holbox as the first luxury hotel on the island. Its location is spectacular, right on the beach, and in front of the bank of sands, it’s basically the last resort on that side of the island.

However, when I went to check out the rooms I was quite disappointed by the old feel of the rooms, especially if you compare it with the other amazing above mentioned properties. I just had the feeling that the rooms need a little refresh from the tired look. But, hey, that’s just my opinion 😉

I still wanted to include it in my post because of its impact on the development of Holbox as a main touristic destination and many guests still love it.
